Engaged!

Yo, guys, I know I don't post too often around these parts .. but on Saturday I popped the question and got the answer I had hoped for.

My girl is a HUGE Amazing Race fan (http://www.cbs.com/amazingrace) and so I planned, for over two months, a race around Manhattan. I took her to a well-known Gelateria, Bookstore, Restaurant, Ale House.. to Macys.. And finally I proposed on the top of a building in midtown (38 & 6th).

The afternoon was filled with snow, champagne, and flowers.. It couldn't have been better..

Getting engaged is the most awesome feeling ever..

Oh, yeah, and I had one of our best friends follow her and her friends (the team) around taping it so I have the whole thing on tape.. Entire race took about 5.5 hours.. She thought she was going to a conference for school but that was all a farse because I had contacted her teacher a while ago to make sure she kept the weekend open.

It was neat because I dropped the clues off at the various places (they looked like real clues.. perforated envelopes, exact Amazing Race logo used on the show, etc) and I wasn't there when they got the clue.. It was incredible.

And, on top of that, I just moved to New Jersey about three months ago because of her.. So it's not the biggest surprise, but she had not realized all I had been planning. Her parents, my parents, our friends, everyone was super-shocked.. So cool to start such commotion throughout all our friends and family..

I was gonna make some dumb joke about being engaged and eventually joining the retired playa's club, but you put so much effort into it and you are obviously excited so i changed my mind...

C.O.N.G.R.A.T.S!!! FYI... if you marry the right woman, yeah, it takes some work, but its worth it ...and remember there is life after marriage, so make her parents pay for the whole thing and be satisfied with that... oh and finally, the only time you get on the wedding day is the grooms toast... so leave everything else up to her and speak only when spoken to about design

thanks all .. especially logic ... hah.. yeah, man, i'm psyched..

was well worth the effort.. especially b/c it's a fun story and so we have to tell it every time someone asks us..

and oy, doing what you have to do to get the diamond you want is super important too.. especially when her friends come over, one by one, inspecting it.

You aernt telling me anything... I got laid off and actually ended up having to cash out my 401k... I told myself I would never spend more than 2k on a ring... well I found a new job, and actually used about 10k to buy her a 1.2carat princess cut centerstone ring (1 carart of channel cut princess stones in her band) ... so I KNOW what you mean. She gets compliments all the time, and when they make her blush... I get the ULTIMATE reward. You're welcome man and CONGRATS again!

EDIT: Make no mistake about it, all her female friends will be peeping out the ring... i went to 7 weddings in 2004 and ALL of them checked out each other's rings. My baby was near the top of the list when all was said and done and that makes me feel good

be careful because this is going to be one of -those- comments:

when you see the ring you want (both diamond + setting), it doesnt really matter (within reason) how much it costs.. i certainly ended up with a ring that was twice what I had expected/planned to spend.. but when I saw what I saw, there was no going back.. i couldnt give her something inferior and be nervous and unsure about it.. it was worth every penny to me to get what I wanted her to wear, and what I thought she would most enjoy.. it's only money right?

besides, it's a symbol of your committment.. it's priceless..

(yah, im pushing it)

Ok, I totally understand the 'symbol of commitment' thing but I should be able to give someone anything and call it a symbol of commitment. It is truly very unfortunate that the chosen symbol happens to be an artificially cost inflated rock. You shouldn't have to be nervous and unsure about giving a girl a 5K ring instead of a 10K ring. The entire point of this is that a 5 thousand dollar symbol and a 10 thousand dollar symbol are the same thing ... a symbol.

In conclusion:
1) 'Symbols of commitment' should not be a manditory two+ month salary raping of your wallet.
2) I liken the price of diamonds to unsolited prison sex.

Long story short -- my girl has waited forever for a diamond. It's something she's dreamed about -- being in love, having a diamond. It's something she has always wanted and I am forunate enough to be the one to satisfy that dream of hers. I was happy to do it and get something that would make it worth the wait.

If you want to spend less, spend less, it's still just as symbolic -- I agree. But for me, it wasn't about how much I spent, it was about getting the right ring. And, in my case, it was more than I had expected to spend, that's all.
