Well-built guys surely attract women's attention but that's not our basis for dating. Besides, physical attraction varies from one person to another.

it's intimidating for a lot of women too... it's safe to say that everybody's insecure about something (about themselves)... I was dating this chick one time that... wasn't in her best shape... I mean... she wasn't fat, but she wasn't any bikini model either... but that's NOT what I look for either... anyway, I had an extra pair of pants inside my car... and she saw the size... and was like... "...OMG!! You waist is almost as small as mine!!!..." She got all weirded out... and really insecure about being naked in front of me there after... 
I get a lot of looks... but do I get a lot of dates? NOT really.
...but I should also add... don't cancel you gym membership because of this... have a membership for your health... and social reasons... but don't cancel it because you don't want to workout anymore because girls don't go for buff guys.

healthy attractive athletic females are attracted to healthy attractive athletic males. It gives them a commonality, in activity and lifestyle. You will never see some aerobics instructor dating a balding beer gut couch potato. Unfortunately, big muscular guys also tend to be total pricks, and that is where they fail to find a real treasure of a woman. If you are looking for a prize Barbi then keep getting ripped. Since im not a girl, i cant really answer the question, but being in very good shape, it does draw alot of attention, and like is300eater said, it also can make girls insecure around you.
Of course its not my encentive, but ppl think because i eat healthy, im going to judge them 24/7, thats not what im about.
Unless your a bubbling fat tub of lard, being ripped is just a really nice bonus opposed to being "in shape". But if its a 1 time thing, i believe the body apperance helps more.

Honestly, get a gym membership for yourself. I go to the gym for my own health and self-confidence - not for my gf. If you feel self conscious, then by all means, get the gym membership and buff up so you can have more confidence in yourself.

Women aren't as attracted to big muscle guys usually. If you get too big, you start getting second and third looks from gay guys (some of who are just as big or bigger), like the guy in my avatar. You don't want that (obviously). I think physically, girls will appreciate a lean, in shape guy, all other things being equal!
Don't cancel your gym membership, just don't lift as heavy. Do more reps at lower weight so you don't get super bulky.
Unlike a lot of men, women aren't usually willing to sacrafice a little bit of intelligence in their man for good looks.

Men and women (hopefully) want the same thing, a best friend to spend their lives with. At minimum be easy on the eyes but dont get caught up in your looks either.
