There's always going to be that one story where guy and gal met at work and lived happily ever after. And for everyone else, it ends up in a mess.

I know a couple that met at work and are still married after several years. He is a trauma surgeon and she was a nurse at the time, she is now a lawyer and they both keep busy, so it seems it has worked, for now.
If you are not supervisor/supervisee relationship with the other person and you are mature enough to talk through the issues and learn not to affect your job performance then it should be okay. The problem is that people don't know how to separate work from "play" and end up drawing co-workers into their lovers' quarrels, etc. There are two partners in my firm that met while they were associates and they are happily married. However, one of the reasons that I am leaving my current job is because I have to deal with other people's relationship crap, and it's just not cool.
I've had a bad experience with dating a woman in the same office building. I was on the 3rd flr and she was on the 2nd flr. There was no buffer between us. If she was mad b4 we got to work, she would be mad at work. Well, she was 3 years younger and naive. that was when I was 22 and she was 19. Now, that I'm 25, I'm more mature than I was back then, and more on top of my game.
I wouldn't necessarily date someone directly in my group or office because everyone will know your business sooner or later...its just a matter of time.
Now, if your company has different buildings and you 2 work in different buildings, that's maybe.
