It would've been priceless to have AD post at a later date that he bought some and said something about the "outer gunk tasting absolutely terrible!"

Well, as a reference, there are dishes I would likely not recommend as they are too "exotic" in Chinese cuisine (i.e. pork blood). But, pidan is really not that bad as long as you can look past the different color.

What did you have for sushi/sashimi?

For something that's raw that really doesn't have a that "raw" fishy taste, you need to try Red Snapper (tai)...
Tai sashimi/sushi is actually the one dish I recommend over all the others when I take clients/associates (who've never tried sushi) out for lunch meetings at Japanese restaurants. Ask the server to give you some ponzu and shaved daikon...!

Of course, back home in Taiwan, grilled eel is also served in a nice bowl of noodles...

Pickled eggs rock, i buy a big thing of eggs (36) then boil vinegar and jalepenos onions, mustard, mustard seed cumin, curry, onion, salt, pepper etc and pour over eggs, wait about a month before eating though, and put luzianne cajun seasoning on them before eating.
