in SF bay area, Michael Mina is my top restuarant.

My wife wants to go to French Laundry so I'll have reservations this year. I can't imagine it's that much better than Michael Mina however, at least not for the trouble of reservations.

Also:

Yume (small japanese place seats 11)

For everyday eating, I hang at:
Tachibana
Gordos
San Jose taqueria
Nations
Merrit Bakery (chicken and waffles)

Was in LA this past weekend and went to Takami in downtown - prettty good.
In LA also like Sasabune and Curry House

Yes I like japanese food.

While I was working in Vancouver and Burnaby, I tried out two absolutely fabulous family-run Japanese restaurants...

- Kura
- Aki

Both are...spectacular. But, of the two, Kura is the one I recommend most. Although, it does not have as strong of a robata selection as Aki, Kura's sashimi selection is better. And aji tataki or karei sashimi for $14.95?!?? Heaven.

Just noticed this. I agree about the food but the people that go there just make me cringe..

I'll need all the luck I can get just trying to get a reservation. My g/f is in the industry and knew a few people there and that doesn't even help with getting my name down.

Actually I've been hearing that as well lately. What annoys me is their reservations policy - unecessarily bitchy. I can understand that you can't make a reservation for 59 days, and only for the 60th day, but to deny reservations for the 61st or the 100th day is stupid to me. Why shouldn't anyone be able to make a reservation 6 months out, espeically if your willing to put the card down with deposit.

In any case it's all good cause I got the hook up. My homeboy is the CTO for Paramount - he's gonna have his assistant call for me.

There's some tips online on how to get reservations - seems like a pain though.

Was in Calgary over the weekend and had the chance to try out a few places that were just absolutely wonderful...For Japanese:

- Wa's
- Shikiji
- Globefish (fusion Japanese)

For tapas and wine:

- Vin Room

Highly recommended if you're ever visiting Calgary!

I tried to book The French Laundry last year for a trip to the bay area.. called exactly on the day that is 60 days out. Called continuously with 2 phones starting 15 mins before till about an hour into the open time and got busy signals throughout. When I was finally connected obviously there was nothing available so they put me on the waitlist for the few days I was in the bay area. Never did get to go.

As a substitute for TFL went to The Dining Room at the Ritz Carlton. Was a very good meal except for desserts.... one of the highlights actually is the bread they serve there.

I really like The Dining Room.

You will have a better shot of getting a reso at French Laundry if you use Open Table. Better if you have two or three people trying at the same time.

Tried OpenTable too, but didn't get it. Based on what I read online there's only one table for 2 each dinner service for 9pm.

I think I'll try my luck at Per Se.. since traveling there is closer.

They should do reservsations like El Bulli though... at least I won't have to spend a morning trying to book something.

I didn't realize it was part of a larger "group" of restaurants, but I highly recommend Bandera, which is part of the Hillstone Group:

http://www.hillstone.com/

Bandera is in Chicago, California and Scottsdale and the menus ara a little different at each:
