Wireless g vs b

This is very puzzling.

When I use my 10Mbps wireless b adapter, I get "Excellent" signal but with 11Mbps.

When I use my 54Mbps wireless g adapter, I get "Very Low" signal but with 54Mbps...

Do you guy know how they come up with the signal strength from XP?

Thanks.

Its not a perfect science....Tr changing channels...Also, try a wireless utility that came with the router / wireless card....If its fast enough, dont sweat it...

tried all the different channels, didn't make any difference.

As soon as I plug my old Wireless b back, it get perfect signal strength.

I also tried different wireless g (USB and PCI) from different brands. Same thing with "Very Low" signal.

In theory, it should be the other way around...It could be a power consumption issue...G takes more power to run. Again, go with B if its stronger. B is faster then Internet traffic...Use G if you are streaming media or copying files...

It could just be down to the receive sensitivity of the cards. Usually that matters more than anything.

Does it matter if it says WiFi Certified or not on the box?

Right now, I am using the Netgear PCI WG311T.
My wireless b is a USB Airlink+ WLL103

So... you saying the antenna from the Netgear is less sensitive then the one in the Airlink+?

ne fix?

my friend gave me an external antenna. I replaced the tiny antenna with the external one. I placed the antenna behind my monitor. I now have a "Very Good" signal instead of "Very Low"!!!

And I am picking up all kind of routers all around my house! hahaha!

well that makes sense to me.

your very low 54 is prob going as fast as your excellent 10 mb.

10/11 mb ~ 90% bandwidth (based on your location, walls its going through, any interference)

now lets say "very low" is 10/54 ~ 19%...but you are moving as fast as you were on your .11b.

54 maybe lacking in this case because it is sending data retries when it doesn't go through walls or gets disrupted in transmission path.

a good baseline would be to stand next to the router and test throughput or move the router closer to you to test throughput.

i agree, i used this firmware on my wrt54g and it helped a ton... especially when i started looking into what every single damn option did.. and set it accordingly...

another idea would be to update the driver on ur wireless card... helped me, i used to go from "Excellent" to "Very Low" or "No Connection" over the course of 10 mins, now it stays at "Excellent"
