Happy ending! Nice to see what MS did to try to make it up for their mistake!

I met a few of the xbox guys the last time I was visiting my friend in Redmond and they were really cool. I'm glad they hooked that guy up.

Also, if you're ever in the area, stop by the MS museum on campus in the MSN production building. There are some really cool gizmos and glimpses of future tech and it's free to wander around.

So when I registered my Xbox for repair this week, the web site was crystal clear that the repair service is a like-for-like replacement, not a same-unit repair.

Have they changed the wording since this incident? When you consider the volume of Xboxes that must come through for repair, the facility that does this must be a huge operation with scads of technicians (and might not even be in the US) that's just not set up to run a special process for a customer who thinks he's got a right to special treatment.

So I have to say I'm pretty impressed with Microsoft's reverse logistics on this.

I requested my repair on Sunday, had the empty box on Tuesday. It had foam inserts and a plastic bag to protect the unit, a very clear photographic instruction sheet printed on glossy paper, tape to seal up the box, and a UPS shipping label. Put it together, drop it off at the UPS store, and it's on its way. Excellent service especially for a consumer goods product. It's too bad they need it so much, but from a logistics standpoint I give them a big

I'd be pissed. I think the original casing was switched. Or the theory that another one was sent to jack with MS is a theory that doesn't seem completely out of the ordinary.

I don't think it was "erased" though

Following up: Not so impressed with the way the reverse logistics work once UPS has delivered to the service center.

You can tell the unit arrived because (a) the UPS tracking tells you so and (b) you are no longer able to track your repair status by serial number -- only by service order number.

Then -- I think you can tell they shipped the refurb unit back to you because you are no longer able to track your repair status at all, probably because the repair is done! And no e-mails yet, so no tracking info on the unit en route.

And it started out so promising.

And today it got even better --

Got an email last night from Xbox support saying that they hadn't received my console and to call them if I needed assistance.

And this afternoon my repaired/refurbished Xbox arrived.

Yep! I would be highly pissed to say the least. But Microsoft came through for him; and something I wouldn't expect them to do. I just wonder what happened to the employee who "cleaned" his original XBOX.

Nothing I hope -- whoever cleaned or replaced the enclosure is just a low paid laborer doing his/her job.

They still have to fix the problem with DMA rights. svtmike, have you tried to play any games you bought online? Once I received my refurb/new 360 and recovered my gamer tag, I was unable to play any of the full games I downloaded thru xbox live. MS says theyre working on it and that it has to do with media rights. There is nothing they can do at this time except offer me a free months xbl code.

I've had to re-download a couple of updates (such as the one that allows the Xbox to play AAC files), but nothing that's affected my ability to play any of my games.
