Vita?....maybe not so much

So the story making the rounds Monday was the supposed final name reveal of Sony's next-generation portable (NGP): the PlayStation Vita. Development sites support the theory and even Giant Bomb's crack reporting has uncovered that Vita may have only been Sony's codename for the system when it was presenting it to developers. "Vita" being a codename that may or may not stick. It's a similar situation to how the "Arc" was the "official" name of what eventually came to be the "Move" controller. We should know what Sony ultimately calls its upcoming handheld next week at E3.

The speculation of Sony joining the nonsense naming approach of previous successes like the "Wii" and "Kinect" branding or whether "Vita" will be pronounced "Vee-ta" or "Vie-ta" matters less to me than more substantial news on the Sony portable front last week.
http://gamrfeed.vgchartz.com/story/8...of-ps-vitangp/

There may be a ray of sunshine yet....no Vita no Vita no Vita.....repeat mantra and perhaps stupid name may disappear!!

Sony's PlayStation Vita official: $249 for WiFi, $299 for 3G

Details about Sony's new handheld have been trickling out for months in the form of spec sheets and fantastic footage of its quad core capabilities. But we didn't know how much it would cost or when we could get our grubby paws on one, and now we know: $249 for WiFi, or $299 for the 3G model, which Sony's Kaz Hirai confirmed will be available exclusively through AT&T, with both models shipping worldwide in toward the end of 2011. Prices are (Prices are 24,980 and 29,980 yen in Japan, euro 249 and euro 299 in Europe.)

The device, also known as the PSVita, also offers six-axis motion sensors, dual analog controls (proper ones, with thumbsticks), front- and rear-facing cameras, an OLED touchscreen, and a touchpad on the back too. The company showed off a number of top-tier titles, including Uncharted: Golden Abyss, a hack-and-slash RPG called Ruin, a new ModNation Racers, LittleBigPlanet, and Street Fighter x Tekken, each showing off plenty of motion and touch interactivity to make it really feel like the next generation in gaming. They're all looking quite good, and honestly a bit more advanced than what the 3DS has delivered so far -- for the same money.

Yeah would like to know the answer to that question, too!

Wait, I have a thought...maybe AT&T carries the 3G version exclusively? And the regular Wi-Fi version is avialable at other retailers?

Sony shafts the customer

The Sony PlayStation Vita (PS Vita) (PCH-1000 series) will use proprietary memory cards. A user by the name of onQ123 on the Neogaf forums posted a picture showing four sizes of the planned chips: 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB.

While they look very much like a standard SD card, they have an extra notch that clearly distinguishes them. This is very unfortunate because it means you will not be able to use any of the SD cards you already have: you will have to go out and buy a Sony memory card if you want additional storage on your Vita.

This sad news follows the great news from last week, when we learned the PS Vita will be region-free. Region-free simply means that you can purchase a game and system from any two different regions and they will be compatible
.

http://www.techspot.com/news/44239-s...ory-cards.html

Ridiculous.

I hope this report is wrong.

Wouldn't surprise me since they use memory sticks with the current PSP.

Late to the announcement. But wow, at $250, I might just buy this. Was planning on buying the PSP to play Peacewalker, but that's coming out for the PS3 now...

I've gotten bored of my iPhone. I mostly use it to check the weather, browse AZ (because posting on it sucks ass) or facebook, make calls and text. I'll use the browser if I'm that desperate due to boredom but I'm tired of using miniature screens. I'm bored of playing games on a 3.5" screen but even taking calls with the HTC Evo (4" screen) feels awkward in your hand.

I used to have a lot of games on it, but it's just gotten really meh for me. Then again my 360 shared the same fate a while ago... it's probably got layers of dust on it.

If I ever get back into portable gaming, the Vita will be the reason why. Always wanted a PSP... I still remember way back in high school when it first came out, my friend had porn on his PSP I'd never seen something like that before.

Really though, this PSP2 sounds like it's got everything I'd need. 5-inch OLED screen, stereo speakers, twin analog joysticks, Sixaxis, Wifi, 3G, Bluetooth, built-in GPS... speaking of which, will it support pinpoint driving directions or is it like the localization thing in the iPhone?

I hope it's a huge success. The 3DS interested me at first but after trying it and hearing about the battery issues it's meh to me. As far as 3G vs. Wifi goes, I'll just wait and see how far the 3G support goes. If it's good enough for me to just get a phone without a data plan, I'll just go with that. Maybe they'll have a real FPS on the PSP now too...

Have you jb'ed your iPhone? Then download some emulators and Installous. But I hear you on games' sophistication without analog. I can't play some games with the touch screen. But then I saw this: http://www.macrumors.com/2011/07/19/...to-the-iphone/

Been there, done that. Just can't beat a 5" OLED screen though... at least in the screenshots it looks great. As far as the Vita's specs on paper go, it's superior to the iPhone for gaming. maybe I'm just a shiny new gadget whore.

That bluetooth control pad looks great though, what bugged me a lot while iPhone gaming was having my thumbs block part of the screen and getting more smudges than usual. If only it came out 2 years ago.

Someone I know had Installous, the SNES emulator on their iPhone, but the phone eventually bricked and they blamed it on how much they played it. Thus, their new iPhone is no longer JB'ed. Maybe that's why they're bored of it?

It's too bad the Vita doesn't do phone calls and have Gingerbread on it or something. It's big for a phone but if it were a Vita that makes calls then you'd probably crossover a lot of iPhone users that want to game and a lot of DS gamers that want both.
