RIP Guitar Hero
I know a few of you cared about rhythm gaming back in the day but moved on to other stuff. I still play Rock Band religiously and thanks to it am learning real guitar and keys. But I wouldn't have started if it were not for playing GH2 and GH3 at my friend's house. Nevertheless, this series brought in some folks and some fun ass parties. Activision announced they were cancelling the game and DLC and laid off 500 employees. DJ Hero is also losing DLC.

Never played it (or Rock Band) but it's kinda shocking. I guess it just goes to show how fast fads come and go. And when they go, they go down fast. I remember hearing people talk about Rock Band and Guitar Hero nonstop for the longest time. It seems these kinds of games really oversaturated the market, though.
Although I can say it's a relief to hear it's gone. Apparently people thought mastering whatever Megadeth or Dragonforce song in Guitar Hero was more of a feat than doing so on a real guitar.

It was inevitable. Rock Band's popularity has completely overshot Guitar Hero. Become obvious when Activision tried to make a Band Hero & it just didn't stand up.
This & the fact that Rock Band has one of the most continuously updated DLC on the marketplace.

I have GH but never played Rock Band. I remember back in the day coming home from the club and playing GHWT until dawn with my girl friend. Sh-t got played out quick it seems. I still want to get DJ Hero but there's so many other games out there.

I think this is a great genre that introduces people to a lot of music and opens up musical appetite. Thanks to these games my 4 hour drive home lugging 9 people in a 10 passenger cargo van from Disney last night would've been painful were it not for the classic rock I was jamming.

Yeah Rock Band did it correctly. Few disc releases so not many $60 sticker shocks. Arguably better translation of notes to colored gems. Able to play almost all of the disc songs in the latest disc so no need to swap discs. 1500+ songs. Now pro innovation where you actually play a 6 string Fender as a real guitar or a keyboard where you play the notes. Hopefully RB3 sustains the genre a la Madden as the sole competitor.

in response to Rock Band "doing it better"
they did the "band" thing better. I agree
GH > rock band in terms of the guitar playability IMO
never did like the rectangle notes and it always seemed to have a more natural lag.
I may break out one of them tomorrow just for kicks.

Guitar Hero got too happy with releasing a new version every year. So they failed. Rockband is great now and it was inevitable. But with that being said, guitar hero two was amazing.

Do you have any guitar experience at all? Go to a Best Buy near you with a music store inside. They should have a RB3 demo set up with the real 6 string Fender. Ask the sales guy to help you check it out. Make sure the guitar has a strap (unless you can sit on the drum throne they'll have there) and a pick. The guitar is a little tricky at first because you're hunting frets and strings but once you get it down it's very fun. The keyboard is super fun too and has been cutting into my guitar practice. Be warned that these instruments have learning curves so don't get frustrated. This game records scoring even in no fail mode so if you'd like you can carelessly wail away.

Well to be fair, they release a new Madden game every 10 months or so, and it really doesn't show signs of stopping

Madden has an advantage as the NFL itself changes yearly so teams and players rise and decline and new acquisitions are made. Music has no set structure nor real life competition to mimic.

In 2009, Activision released SEVEN guitar hero games, and harmonix released 4. That's just ridiculous.
Activision takes the heat though, since many of them are just retreads, and could have been done with downloadable songs/characters.
The only real retread Harmonix did was Green day. Even Lego had new gameplay modes, which was cool.

One version every year would be just fine.
