rFactor vids - historic racing anyone?

Formula 1 1979 ala rFactor

Within the world of this sim these things are a much bigger handful to drive than their modern counterparts. Very little grip at low speed. I would have to assume that's true to real life as well. Regardless I was giggling like a little schoolgirl when I finished this race. I'm in the #27 Williams, BTW.

In-car 9.4 MB (watch this one first)

Selected TV cams from same lap 7.8 MB

Disclaimers:
1) This mod is in v1.0 so there are indeed a couple of things you can nit pick including that it's not quite as pretty than the other mods I've posted screenshots of. But the action on the other hand...
2) I only have Windows Movie Maker for video stuff so sorry about the bloated-yet-small WMVs.

Most people who are into PC racing sims (myself included) hate the driver arms & hands. The reason is that they don't move proportionate to the actual steering input you're providing. It's definitely possible for arms/hands to be done "correctly" but they would have to be actual modeled 3D objects with multiple axes of rotation, their own collision detection, and so forth. Just a waste of framerates that could be going into the vehicle and track rendering.

Well in real life your head is probably where most of the roll bar and roof cams are anyway.

My rig is nothing special at all by today's standards: Athlon64 3800+, 1 GB DDR400 RAM, 256MB 7900 GT . The videos were actually exported from rFactor at a fixed 30fps. Actual game frame rates are obviously much better than that number. Probably 1.5x - 2.5x that depending on what's going on at the time.

Dan, I pretty much always use the cockpit cams now. I was a roof/roll bar druver back in the days of F1 Challenge 99-02 and its various mods. The main reason was that you couldn't adjust the position of the cockpit view unless you edited an ini file. Even then, it was a PIA since you were just guessing with arbitrary numbers and the setting was global for the whole game.

Beginning with the first GTR, you've been able to use the cursor keys to adjust the cockpit "seat position" while you're sitting in the car. Same holds true for GTR2 and rFactor. At least as far as I can remember. This adjustability combined with assigning glance left/right to the two outer most thumb buttons on my wheel has converted me to being a cockpit driver.

As an aside, check out the LeMans 1972-1986 project that's in the works for rFactor.
