thanks for this post, I was just about to go out and buy one
can you guys educate me a little bit on the PSP? Can I "cheat" and DL games off the internet? How about movies? Or do I need to purchase everything?
I travel a lot and am looking for something that can keep me pretty entertained but don't want to always be shelling out 2x's the money since most the games i'd buy for the PSP i'd have for my PS3

Also, the PSP has been screaming for a second analog stick. As far as placement, its not too bad where it is.

so basically if I get the new one I'll have the newest firmware and will be screwed?

Sorry if this is a dumb question but...
How does 80 pounds get cut in half to $40 while 6000 doubles to 12K?

I know there are emulators for most pre-32-bit consoles. Super Nintendo games are popular choices. There's also stuff like calculator programs, etc.
Even know of a few that allow you to use the PSP as a TV remote.

Not that I have huge hands or anything but the size of the PSP now... my hands get cramped or numb after awhile... I can't imagine it, being thinner... But I also believe a 2nd stick would be a better improvement.
I don't understand the obsession over video out
I never play it if I have a tv around, that is what the consoles/computers are for.
is300 - I'm with you, it already isn't the greatest shape, being thinner would cause my hands to cramp up (more).
CLpower - ViperrepiV hacked up my psp so I can play downloaded psp games, downloaded ps1 iso's, NES games, SNES (technically though it doesn't work well). The way we did it is a little complex, but now there is a much easier way using an exploit in the game Lumines. Not sure how to do it but I'm sure a quick google search could help you with that.

For the movies that I'll be able to burn to it. Very portable with them on MS, then carrying around around a portable dvd player and DVD's. Plus it plays games. Plus with a doms unit in the car, I'd be set.

From IGN...
Sony has slowly been upping the functionality of the PSP, taking it beyond just games and movies and into, most recently, the high tech world of global positioning. But it appears that the company is just getting started.
As part of a flurry of announcements from today's PlayStation Premiere event in Tokyo, Sony Japan announced a 1Seg Tuner device for the PSP. Attach this to the PSP USB port in much the same way that you attach the GPS receiver and camera to the system now, and you'll turn the system into a portable TV that's capable of receiving digital television broadcasts.
The 1Seg Tuner will go on sale on 9/20 at a cost of 6,980 yen. It will be compatible exclusively with the new PSP-2000 redesign, so current PSP owners are out of luck.

My step brother burned me a ton of PSP games. I just need to figure out how to install them.
I'd like to buy the new version so I could have web browsing again. I doubt I'll do it though. I need an iPod before I get another PSP.
You don't need to sacrifice any new features to be able to have homebrew/iso/whatever.
I hacked my PSP to have the custom firmware "3.40 OE-A". This allows me to have all the latest features, such as web browsing and PS1 emulation. Yet, since it's custom firmware it also allows me to have ripped PS1 games, full PSP isos, N64 games (yes mario kart 64!), etc as well as giving me something known as a "recovery menu" that you get to by holding the right button while turning on the PSP. This menu allows you to do many things, in particular change the clockspeed of the CPU to run games smoother.
etc. To do this you need an unpatched legit UMD copy of GTA: liberty city stories as well as other files (that can be found on the internet free of charge). I suck at explaining, but check out www.us.playstation.com for tutorials on how to do this.

O.K., I have been looking at getting one of these sometime this year. If I get a new one (say in 3-4 months from now) will I be able to play all the other games you guys are? Specifically the NES,and SNES ones that are downloaded to a Memory stick. I know nothing about these, how hard is it to download something to a memory stick?
Also, in the link Mizouse gave, I see where it says the new one will be lighter and have a video output, But how do you know about it being thinner, better battery, and improving umd load times?

Sorry for all the questions, but like I said, I'm a newb when it comes to these.

This all depends on the firmware these new PSP units ship with. Some firmware is not able to be downgraded. SNES, NES, ISOs, etc are not possible with legit sony firmware.
Some impressions from IGN: http://psp.ign.com/articles/816/816852p1.html
Does a comparo between old version and the new one.
