40gb has no backward compatibility. Not sure about the 80.
And to whoever said the PS3 is more powerful, what does that mean? So far, all the games that are on both systems have been identical pretty much. COD 4 looks exactly the same on both systems.
Not bashing the PS3 because I am a Sony fan (but I have only a 360 right now), but I don't think either system has anything more than the other in terms of graphical ability, unless like the PS2, developers haven't unlocked its full potential. I think both machines are already pushed to their graphical limits, I mean, how much more realisitic can the games get? And as far as Blu-Ray, I don't know, thats for the future to decide. I think there will be more HD-DVD support as time goes by.
Get PS3, I bought my xbox360 at launch 6 months later it crap out due to hardware failure, the infamous 3 red lights : (. I'm a casual gamer i don't play hardcore so i can't believe that happened in just 6 months i was playing NFS Most Wanted too. Anyways the Xbox 360 still have hardware issue i think, not sure if they fixed it? Since the MS Xbox 360 VP announced that they're extending 3 years on the original warranty, So now i have to send my system back for repairs. I just bought PS3 recently i'm glad i did i should have bought it last year. Anyways i'll probably still keep the 360 for Halo 3 but i'll use the PS3 more than the 360.
Dunno about the HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray war but last i checked Blu-ray have been outselling HD-DVD every month for the year by the Nielsen's ratings. So my bet is on Blu-ray.

But I guess there's all kinds of other stuff you can do with the console... I just have no interest in personally
