So, a price drop. Combine this with the earlier post that Sony is selling the user info to companies.
Not worth the spam.

Still not worth the 500 bucks. Mine has been collecting dust since I got it. Maybe it will be more that a brick when gta4 comes out.

I don't know much about the game console industry but my friend predicted this was gonna be a big gamble for Sony which may never pay off. But considering MS charging back $1Bil...where does Sony stand in comparison?

MS as a company is safe overall. They make revenue, lots of it. Not great news with the xbox right now, though I like that I now have a 3 year warranty. Sony is losing money is more of their then just video games I believe. I think I read an article last year that the only way they were able to cite themselves out of the red was because of their earnings in the movie industry (they own columbia pictures.) They had some hits last year that put them in a good place to cover there other assets.

Well, Blu-Ray has pulled WAY ahead in the next-gen DVD format war (Read: http://www.thedigitalbits.com/articl...oap060107.html). HD-DVD is hanging strong, but I'd buy a PS3 just for that reason. Playing games would just be gravy.

Not worth the spam.
They are selling usage stats to Nielsen. Nielsen already tracks what you do, via your television set. If anything, this indicates a move towards a greater integration with the very fabric of modern society. I mean, they are moving the PS3 into the likes of a TV-like device. /bigpicture

Just saw this deal too.

I was waiting for this price drop, now it's time to buy it and return my $500 Blu-Ray player.

Can't wait for Gran Turismo and Metal Gear

Oddly for me my Wii has been collecting dust so I let my friend have it on a extended loan. Though it's been a blast to play at parties I need to get something better... Debating between the 360 and the PS3, I think Sony's games will make it worth it.

I think I've mentioned it before, but thedigitalbits has gone from a once small and very trusty worthy site for new and info to a very biased site. As they have grown I have watched their reporting go from very neutral to heavily opinionated. And they champion Blu-Ray very openly so I no longer find them to be much of a reliable source when it comes to next gen formats. That said I do not think BluRay has pulled WAY ahead. It may be leading sales right now, but in the bigger perspective SD-DVD is still outselling both. Until undecided studios jump on board to one of the formats, who leads who is going to be a game of leap frog.

That's the thing. Many studios are starting to jump to Blu-Ray, as well as Blockbuster expanding Blu-Ray rentals but not HD-DVD rentals. That's why you're seeing big price drops for HD-DVD players. And that article debunks another article that was stating errors about Blu-Ray. Digital Bits may champion Blu-Ray (and they so much admit as much) but that's because they see it winning the format war.

HIGH-DEF MARKET SHARE - BRD VS HD-DVD SOFTWARE SALES (6/24/07 - Nielsen/VideoScan):

Week Ending 6/24 Blu-ray Disc: 70 HD-DVD: 30
Year to Date Blu-ray Disc: 67 HD-DVD: 33
Since Inception Blu-ray Disc: 59 HD-DVD: 41

I'd say a 70-30 software market share advantage for Blu-Ray is WAY ahead. By the way, I'm no Blu-Ray fanboy. I personally could give a rat's ass which format wins. I just want one format, rather than having to worry about buying a dead technology.

I don't think I've heard of any studios recently announcing any changes in which format they will or wont support. I could be wrong, but I think that has been a stalemate for a while now. Toshiba ran a month long promo where they dropped the price of the hd-dvd players by $100. I haven't been to a store to see if they decided to just run with it, but by the same token BluRay players are starting to comedown as well. As for blockbuster, they are a troubled company as is and I don't hold any choice they make as a factor in the any outcome. As for the bits. BluRay always looked better on paper, but their intital support went to HDDVD, overnight it just changed. Their site all got bigger and better all of a sudden. I'm not saying they are being paid by the bluray camp for outward support, but I dont put it out of the realm of possiblities either.

On this we can agree. I am invested in HD-DVD only by a $200 xbox player as I get all the movies via netflix. So, if it loses I'm out nothing. The reality the way I see it is both formats are limited time technology anyway. This is hold me over media for something bigger coming. Either via downloads (such as xbox live is doing) or something along the lines of holographic disc technology.

I hate both format. The company I work for support HD-DVD and at home my brother has a PS3. I hate HD-DVD until they give me a system with a HD-DVD player. In the meantime, I support both format via download.

To become a "Nielsen family" and track your TV viewing habits, you have to be randomly selected and then sign-up and volunteer to do so.

I don't think Nielsen has anything in a majority of TV sets

So much for Sony's denial of a price drop.

Sony's only saving grace is Blu-Ray is pulling ahead. I'll probably buy one just to have a Blu-Ray player.

I still wouldn't get one yet. We'll see how Madden is on the PS3 verses the 360....

Hahaha...I be laughing at all those people who waited days in line(and out in the cold, no less!), and those who bought theirs on Ebay at rediculous prices! Damn!! Um....yeah, I would be pissed too.
Strange; I kinda feel bad for Sony(my fav electronics manufacturer)

I gotta resist the temptation(to get one now) 'cause I've had my 360 since launch!
In 2 years maybe?

who cares, it was worth the extra $100 to be playing mine for as long as I have. The vast majority of systems go through price drops.

I got my 60GB version tonight for $499 at Circuit City and they added in an additional wireless controller for free. I stopped by Target to get an HDMI cable (CC wanted 60 bucks) and they still had the 599 price for the PS3.

Now I have to find the Sony site for me to get the free movies.
