Need Help / Got Q's on Getting a New PC

I need to get a new computer, and it seems to be a lot harder to do than the last time I got one (admittedly, that was over eleven years ago). After looking around at everything, I'm pretty sure I just need/want what would be considered a casual-use computer, but even so, I would appreciate any input regarding the minimums I should be looking at for the following:

Processor (dual/quad, speed)
Memory (I know > 4MB requires 64-bit)
Video card (amount of dedicated memory)

My current plans are to use the computer for internet (primarily to work remotely via Citrix, but also some random surfing), retrieving "watch instantly" stuff from Netflix (to watch on my TV, not the PC), MP3's (downloading/storing), an occasional spreadsheet, and that's probably about it (I know, really exciting stuff there).

Thanks in advance.

Mac? PC? Laptop? Desktop?

For your use, you sholdn't need to spend more the $700...

I'm still trying to decide PC/Mac, desktop/laptop. I see pluses and minuses with each.

- Mobility within my house would be nice, but beyond that (travel), not really necessary.

- Not a Windows fan, but not 100% I can use Citrix with Mac.

You know the drill....
Windows - Better compatibility with corporate apps (Netflix will work on both).
Desktop - you get more bang for your buck when it comes to power.
Laptop - better for mobility

^True, but those are the easy things to nail down. I'm lost on what I need spec-wise. Yeah, sure, I can get a 2.8 Ghz quad processor, 8MB RAM, 750 GB HD, and a 1GB video card, but I have the distinct feeling that would be beyond overkill. What do I need to adequately do those things I'm looking to do?

You can do that on systems 3-4 years old pretty quickly.

Wow, so the el cheapo/base models will work? I wondered if technology had greatly exceeded need by now...guess it has in my case. It would probably be different if I was playing games, doing video editing, or working with massive databases.

I was planning on getting an HP or a Mac, just trying to figure what I need in it.

My current front-runner idea is getting a box and hooking it my TV via HDMI and using a wireless keyboard/mouse. I'd have a great monitor, simplified connectivity for Netflix (including HD), and ease of playing music on the real speakers. Basically, using the computer as a media center linked directly to the home theater, except use my PS3 for BDs and DVDs.

What are the specs on your current computer? You could probably use that to stream movies, netflix, music etc.

I also just bought a DV3 for a friend and it is very nice too. Tiny laptop and it even has an HDMI port.

I bought it in the summer of '97 before my second year of college...don't think I can use if for much of anything. I do have one of my dad's old one's that's maybe five or six years old; it only needs a HD. Replacing the internals on either of those wouldn't be hard, but I'd need to replace almost everything, if not everything...might as well just get a new box and donate those for a tax deduction.

1) Is a video card with 256MB enough?

2) Intel or AMD?
