Motherboard is dead

OK, I did a search in here and in theater and electronics for motherboard or chipset in the title and got nada, so if this has been covered I'm sorry.

I had an ASUS Rambus motherboard and it's dead. I have not even looked at current chipsets in almost 3 years and don't know what is the current flavor of the month right now. I usually buy a not quite brand new chipset and processor so that the cost isn't so high, but as long as I stay under $300-$400 it doesn't matter so much. The only real gaming I ever do is counter strike and even that has been rare. Any suggestions? I understand that apparently DDR has rendered Rambus a dead end, but if possible I'd like to stick to it for now as I already have the memory and all.

Sorry - clarification. I plan to spend about $300-$400 on a new motherboard and cpu together. I currently have a 2.4 GHz Pentium 4 and an ASUS motherboard but I'm at work right now and can't give you the model exactly.

My fear is that if I just replace the motherboard I'm gonna kick myself in the butt for not upgrading the cpu at the same time - that, and it is possilbe (but unlikely) that when the board went it fried my cpu too. I've got a gigabyte of Rambus RAM currently.
