Microsoft XNA
Microsoft XNA
this is pretty damn cool. I think this is one of the great "wishes" of many gamers. Cross-compatibility between consoles and PC's.

Microsoft XNA to create common platform for Windows and Xbox 360 games

San Jose (CA) - Microsoft today unveiled a pre-release version of the first its XNA Studio tools and framework which is designed to create a common development platform for Windows and Xbox 360 games. There will be also a common controller which will allow PC users to play against console gamers.
The first community technology preview (CTP) released at the Game Developers Conference 2006 arrives two years after Bill Gates revealed at GDC 2004 that Microsoft is working on a technology that would bring a "powerful next-generation software development platform." XNA promises to streamline several development steps and, according to Microsoft, "XNA lets developers focus on game design, instead of writing mundane, repetitive boilerplate code."
The CTP includes "key components" of XNA Studio and Framework. In this first stage, Microsoft plans to expose game developers to its new idea and intends to gather "as much feedback as possible." The company promises developers that Studio will provide a "more efficient" way to create new games with more features, by reducing the time to develop maintaining an internal tools infrastructure. The XNA Framework represents a custom implementation of the .NET Framework with new libraries to develop cross-platform games for Windows and Xbox 360.
While developers are expected to crank out more games in less time, users may be seeing benefits of XNA in the not too distant future. The technology will decrease the amount of differences between PC and console games and will enable PC users to play against Xbox 360 owners in online multiplayer games. Microsoft also announced the addition of the "Xbox Live Server Platform" to its Xbox Live services. Using this platform, developers can create their own back-end servers to run alongside Xbox Live. According to the company, the service will offer new capabilities, such as a "spectator mode" for up to 30,000 users in games such as the upcoming Project Gotham Racing 3.

Xbox 360 is already intrinsically integrated with XP - I mean hell, it's made by the same damn company.
Sony can't touch that level of integration, not even if they have the technology or know-how to do it. I am sure Microsoft will keep it that way.

this is probably as close as Sony will get to such a cross-sharing-setup, for now...

FORMULA ONE 06 CROSSES PS2-PSP DIVIDE
Owners of PS2 version can play against owners of PSP version, Sony reveals about latest instalment
16:11 Gentleman, start your engines... Sony's revealed that June 2006 will witness the release of Formula One 06 on PSP and PS2. As you'd expect, the latest instalment in the series boasts a number of new features along with all the official 2006 drivers, cars, teams, circuits and rules. We're sure that's got your motor running. Haha, what a funny gag, or, as Basil Brush might say if he were a car, "Vroom, vroom".
Formula One 06 caters for both the racing newbies and wish-we-were-professional-Formula-One-drivers out there in the wide world and, very excitingly, features network play across both versions - i.e. owners of the game on PS2 can play against owners of the game on PSP. Or, if you own both versions on both platforms, you can play with yourself. Ahem.
Yes, well, anyway... Sony has very kindly put together a list of key features in Formula One 06 which has been included in the announcement on the game, so we'll print it here as received for your entertainment:
* Accessibility: Thanks to new racing aids, any gamer can pick-up and play FORMULA ONE 06 and enjoy the exhilaration of driving a FORMULA ONE car. Equally, if you're a confirmed F1 driver, you can scale the gameplay to make it more simulation oriented. Either way, you will have access to a Tips and Learning Centre to constantly improve your racing skills
* Online Play: You can now race online in a complete 18-race season! Relive the excitement and the competition of a full championship season. Winning it will make it even more satisfying!
* Cross Platform: Race online between all PlayStation platforms!
* Realism: Race in this year's championship with all the 2006 drivers, cars, teams, circuits and rules!
* Classic Cars: Unlock and take the wheel of classic FORMULA ONE cars
* Extensive Career Mode: Chief Engineer - A new way of playing career mode
* Live Action Racing: Pressure system, AI mistakes and collisions, race incidents, new physics
* Race Car Evolution: Tune and set up your car without going through complicated menu screens
* The PSP version will also take advantage of Infrastructure Mode allowing you to race online, a first for FORMULA ONE on PSP
