okay i just got ( lokitorrent ) doom 3... keep in mind i bought halflife when it came out...

the gameplay really sucks... it reminds me of the first doom ass crappy shooter. everything is so unreal the movement of the character, gun shot sound/recoil effects, ambience, and the physics cant even compare to halflife 2... i got an older shooter ( soilder of fortune ) that i'd pick over doom 3 anyday

i guess if i played it before HL2 i would have loved doom 3.... after halflife 2 nothing compares...

Doom3 has better GFX than half-life. Their lighting engine is far superior to the HL2 engine.

Really two different games, doom3 is a horror story and your the actor. It's suppose to be scary...

I agree HL2 is better, but there is a substantial difference between the two games. While they are both FPS's, thats about all they have in common.

 

Doom 3 as a game ENGINE is great. As a game, it blows. Its far far too repetitive with nothing new. Its annoying to switch to flashlight, back to machine gun and CONSTANTLY be in the dark. Its just lame.

As for game physics, graphics.. its excellent. Overall, a disappointment.

i thought this was what made doom3 shine.. it definitely had that original doom sneaking up feeling.. and having to choose between the flashlight and a weapon, in my opinion, was hilarious. it def added suspense to the game. Keep in mind a lot of the game is things charging you, causing you to panic, etc. In this respect it pretty much did that. And the sound effects were great.

i really liked it.. if anything it was too short.

 

I think the game is decent. Nice graphics and terrific sound effects.
One of the scariest games I've played in a while too!

As a run-and-gun type of shooter, I'd stick to the other stuff like Unreal Tournament 2K4...Otherwise, I think Doom 3 is in a way, a different type of genre as it is meant to be more plodding along as that helps in the overall mood of the game.

 

Oh Come on, Doom 3 was not that bad. Probably would not make my top 10 list but i enjoyed it. i mean the MP sucks, but in the next year some good MODs are on the way. Should make up for the downfall from doom 3

Doom 3 does a great job with atmosphere. The horror movie aspect ranks up there with Silent Hill - truly a shit yourself game. And the engine is just amazing. Absolutely amazing. I want to have John Carmack's baby.

It's real weakness is variety. There just isn't much to do but pee your pants every 3 seconds. But what it does, it does extremely well - the game should come with a 3 pack of Hanes.

HL2 isn't as scary, or as pretty, but it is a more well rounded game. Its engine shines in the physics department. This is one of the few games where i've felt any emotional connection with the characters (not a particularly deep one, but i kinda care somewhat about them ). The facial animations really add to that. The city scenes are an excellent representation of what I imagine 1984 or fahrenheit 451's cities to look like. I felt the other areas were kinda weak - the dune buggy and swamp boat areas bored me to death save for a few cool scenes designed to show off the engine.

In short, both are good for their own reasons.
