Well its for a friend. He just asked me, says he basically needs an all around computer, wants to do a little gaming, browsing and downloading music. Probably has about 1.2k to blow? any Ideas on what he should get???

Can you buy a controller similar to what you use on X360 or PS3 to use on your computer for gaming? I have a gaming laptop, way out of that budget though, and I wouldn't mind a controller to use to play on it. Might prompt me o actually buy some games for it, instead of my PS3 - as some games get better reviews on PC.

Yes, Gamestop sells a $10 USB Logitech Precision controller. For $20 you can get one that has analog sticks. I got the $10 one. Works great on my mac for playing SNES games. My kid is having so much fun playing SNES games that I'm going to get a second controller for two player action
For $10 I don't think it can be beat if you don't need analog.

just buy the XBOX 360 wired controller and plug it in thru USB

or buy the PS3 controller and plug it in with a USB cable and download the drivers for it.

it works great!
