For those living in the gaming cave, Spore is the next title from Will Wright, the person behind, Sim City, Sim Earth, Civilization, etc....
The idea behind Spore is pretty much "Sim Everything". You literally go from single celled life forms in the primordial ooze to intelligent space-faring civilization out to colonize the galaxy.
Here's a 30+ minute video of Wright demoing the various "phases" of the game. It's about two years old now but I think this is still one of the most thorough presentations of the game.

I thought this game was going to be on Xbox 360. I guess I have to get it for PC. It looks quite interesting. hopefully you can make natural disasters and see if they survive or make them carnivores and have to eat your other creations.
When is a better sim city coming out by the way. Sim City + The Sims (who can actually talk, and have individual lives) would be a hot combo.

I'm still
that they haven't done a new version of the last SimCity. The new SimCity Societies is a bunch of
I also wish they would bring back SimCopter. It was cool being able to create a city in SimCity and then load that into SimCopter and fly through your city.
When will they learn they don't have to keep re-inventing themselves, just fix and improve shyt.

Just in case you didn't catch the blip earlier between Steve's announcement of the iPhone SDK and the App Store, here's some fantastic news for the thumb-happy sect: Spore is coming to the iPhone. In fact, the EA Mobile title will go down as "the first 3rd party game on the iPhone." Sadly, it won't actually be available until September, but at least you've got a month to circle on your calender, right? Additionally, EA affirmed that there were "other games in early stages of development," and that it was "actively using the new iPhone SDK to develop games for the iPhone OS." Jump on past the break for the full release.

I think some of the tech news outlets may be taking this somewhat out of context. I don't think the entire game is coming to the iPhone or any other mobile device.
Back in February when the original announcement was made, I read an interview with an EA person that said the mobile platform for Spore was going to be a fundementally different experience than what was included in the computer version. At today's Apple event I believe the EA guy said somethng like "We have all 18 levels up and running, a full editor."

The pigs are flying, hell is slightly chilly, and the atheists are shaking their fists: Spore has officially gone gold.
I'm thinking about it.
From the reviews, though, from a pure 'game' standpoint, it's not a very complex game.
The funnest parts is making your own creature, and just interacting from all the interesting stuff users have made.
It makes sense - it's basically 5 smaller games merged into one game. Each game, taken on its own, has been done better by someone else. But Spore should be played for the whole, not for the parts, I guess.

I guess it looks kind of cool, but IMO, nothing has ever come close to TES: Oblivion.
I know it's not exactly the same genre, but they do both seem to have that 'free feel' type gameplay.
Maybe I'm just biased but nothing comes close to TES.
This is probably the best quote I've read so far:
Finding great content is like panning for gold. You'll occasionally discover something interesting or cool. And sometimes you'll hit the mother-lode, such as the time we found a civilization populated entirely by elaborate player-created emperor penguins involved in a heated religious war. These laugh-out-loud moments of discovery are what make Spore so unique.
