Half Life 2: Freezing and computer recomendation
About 5 months ago I purchased a brand new Dell XPS computer (2.8GHz, 1GBram, 5.1 sound card,...) because the computer I was using at the time was about 5 years old and more importantly I wanted to play Half Life 2.
Unfortunately I am one of those people that has the freezing problem and I have never been able to fix it. I can not tell you how pissed off I still am about this. I'll never buy another Valve/Steam game but would still like to play HL2 as I have already paid for it.
Can anyone recomend a recent couputer purchase that worked right out of the box with HL2? I would rather not have to go through a bunch of mods or software fixes.

I have a Sound Blaster Audigy and months ago I had downloaded the latest upgrades with no luck.
I found a lot of people with the same problem and no support whatsoever from Valve/Stream.
I was unable to find any fixes that worked the last time that I looked. This was months ago though. I disabled fast writes, swapped the modem and video card locations,... Unfortunately, as typical, all of the "fixes" just screwed other things up. Some game videos are choppy now, the computer didn't recoginze the modem so I had to call tech support, etc. Basically it was a lot of hassles with no results.
That's why I was hoping to find someone that just purchased a new computer and the game worked out of the box. My theory is if I get the same set up and (hoping) the software is the same I should be ok.

Do they make pci-e modems now a days?
Sorry i'm just a bit confused. I did have a number of problems with hl2 crashing, but I finally found the problem to be a stick of ram. Ever run memtest86.
As for new computers, anything with a decent video card should work fine with the source engine. Even my old radeon 9500 pro did ok.

Believe it or not we only have two reasonable options in my community for internet access: dial up and cable.
Of course Comcast is sticking it to us to the tune of almost $50 per month. I really only use the home system for email so it is dial up for me.
If I can get HL2 to run though I will get the cable modem. The freakin upgrades took something like 14 hours to download on dial up. Plus, I'll be able to play Battlefield 2 on line.
I'll try memtest86, that's a new suggestion. Thanks
And I would think that anything with a decent video card should work but that isn't the case with HL2.

Easy, I don't know because I haven't played enough. It is really annoying for a game to lock up randomly every 5 - 10 minutes.
I wouldn't call Half Life hard though and I loved that game. I played the single person multiple times, on the internet, on an intranet at work during lunch, ... hundreds and hundreds of hours and never got bored.
I'll get the cable modem, download the latest upgrades and drivers for everything. Hopefully that will work.
Thanks and later

HL 2 is not about if its easy or not LOL...its about the story line, thats what makes it a great game, HL2 /E1 was easy to play but again its not about how many points you rack up, it about been part of the story line.....
