graphics card question
graphics card question
I have this:
VisionTek Xtasy 9200 SE 128MB DDR PCI
Should this be good enough to play games with? I've had it for a while but I just tried playing command and conquer generals with it last night and it sucked....really slow.
Are there settings I need to adjust or something... or is this just not a very good graphics card?
I just ordered that lord of the rings game
and I want to make sure I have a good enough card to play it...

sigh... same problem i have...
If you do research... trust me i've done it man.. you'll find that the PCI interface is 149803987X slower than the industry standard for Video Cards, which is AGP interface.
No matter how good the PCI card is, the data transfer rate is NOTHING compared to an AGP 4x, or 8x...
sorry beet.. the only option for us agp deprived gamers is to get a new motherboard...
If that idea tickles your pickle, there is a new interface that blows AGP out the door called
"PCIe" e means express and its rated at 16x.. so if your motherboard shopping look for a PCIe device...
BTW you can play these games with your current setup with the graphics lowered all the way and maybe a 600x800 resolution... looks like shit but it works...
and if you were going to ask, more ram, and faster processor will not affect it the way you would like it to... its all in the video card...

I do like ATI, but one pet peeve I have is their customer support. It's pretty decent, however it's only like 30 days for free support, there's no 800 number, and their office is in Canada so the phone charges can be expensive.

Thanks for the link goose.. so is that what I should get? Is that overkill for the games I have?
my 2 cents: for that price, I would rather go for the geforce 6600GT, rated higher in almost every test vs. the 9800 pro. you can find it for probably 200 shipped on newegg. Their service is the best! Just make sure it's compatible with your other hardware. Mainly, your motherboard.

Great card thats still somewhat reasonably priced.
I bought a 6800GT OC for $350 about 2 months ago. I still think Nvidia > ATI. But thats just my opinion.

- 3dfx Voodoo Banshee
- 3dfx Voodoo3 2000 (left over in parts bin)
- ATi Radeon
- ATi Radeon 8500
- ATi Radeon 9800 Pro (still in HTPC box)
- nVidia GeForce 6800 GT
OK how about this...GeForce FX 5700 LE Optima 128MB DDR AGP
I really don't want to spend a ton of money, considering I hardly ever play PC games... would this work well enough?

btw www.activshopper.com finds the product you looking for and tells you the cheapest price automatically... works on MOST famous sites ie amazon, tigerdirect, etc...

Our NetApp SE was in here last week and was telling me you can apparently Soft Mod either a X800PRO to an X800XT Platinum or a 9800 Pro to a 9800 XT Platinum. I dont recall which he said he had. He did say it was the AGP model if that helps.
Anyway, the PRO he bought was like $350 and the XT Plat version was over $600.
All he had to do was stuff the BIOS of the XT Plat into the PRO and it unlocked the extra 4 pipelines and ran like a bat out of hell. He said he pushed it back to PRO and then again to XT Plat just to double check the increase in FPS he was seeing was really just because of that. Was getting anywhere from 20-40% better FPS in the games he was testing.
