F.e.a.r.

anyone else checked out FEAR?

demo version available through the Sierra website, makes HL2 look like old news, playing half the demo level made my vid card go from 54deg to 71deg... sick game its a FPS.

I tried the demo when it came out a few weeks ago and it would install but not run. It would just crash with some errors
Screenshots look cool, though!

I recently "acquired" it, but haven't installed it yet. The demo was really cool; the enemies are like nothing I have played against before and the little girl and hallucinations scared the crap out of me .

Hey guys,
My buddy has the game so we stayed up all night playing it and almost have it beat. It gets boring after a while because you are in this one freaking building for AGES. The AI is pretty impressive in the game. You can get some cool kills with the gun that shoots spikes,....get them pinned up against the wall etc. There are some parts that startle you,......the little girl like the one from the Ring scares you a few times like Lister said.

I think I like HL 2 more (although I have only seen it at my friends house),....just because I used to be the biggest counter strike fan,....dont know if I will find a game I like as much as CS. Fear is pretty good overall though.

What are the specs of your system?

I'm running it off of the following:

2.4 ghz P4
1.5 GB DDR PC2700 (1 GB stick, 512 MB stick)
Radeon 9800 Pro 128 MB

I get 20-30 fps on high, so not too bad .

3.0 ghz P4 w/HT <-- good

512 MB PC3200 <-- bad
128 MB Radeon 9200<--bad

I know what the problems are, I just can't decide which to go after first

Haha. Perfect setup for the second one, eh?

I think's a really good game. It gets better and better as it progresses, unlike some other shooters that become boring after a while.

Definitely got better as it went on (though I had to upgrade my video card just to play it ) Also thought the controls were much easier to manage than HL2.
HL2 got sorta meh after awhile and I just stopped playing it. Now that I'm done with Fear i guess I'll have to give it another shot.

Yeah, I stopped playing HL2 too in the middle of it and it's been sitting on the shelf collecting dust ever since. It's not a bad game, but I get bored easily, and F.E.A.R. kept me entertained the whole time.

I hated those little invisible things, they kept appearing out of nowhere.

I almost shat myself a few times on the last level, when the ghost/spirit things just kept popping out of nowhere

Haha, I know that one time in the factory where they just kept coming for a couple of minutes, or when they would sometimes come out of nowhere from behind. Thank god I picked up that uzzi weapon.

I tried to get back into it but its not easy after FEAR. I'm at the part where you're tooling around in the dune buggy (after that large bridge) just driving to the houses and blowing shit up
FEAR had a much faster pace and better controls, IMHO, though the HL2 physics engine is much cooler. Need to get used to the HL2 keyboard layout again

I just recently "acquired" it as well. The first time i died was from that chick from the ring. I jumped over a rail and she appeared and the whole room started catching on fire.

I need to upgrade my ram to run the game with the best settin. My video card should run the game but my ram is only 512. I got the ATI 9800 128. A 1.7 p4, kind lof low but it works....

My next rig is gonna be an amd chip. Cant deciede whether i want to finance a Alienware, or build my own. I know i can build my own a lot cheaper than an alienware, but those things are sweet. Only 5k though. I can use a lot of what i already have if i built my own.
All i need is a motherboard, 1gig ram, and a case.

i cant believe you could run that game at the highest settings with that card. im sure more ram would help but you will max that video card out pretty fast. if you know off hand whats kind of 3dMark05 numbers does that thing put out?

I have no idea.

I can play MOST games. COD2 runs great. doom 3 runs ok, quake 4 runs ok on the lowest setting, CS is good. I have not installed fear yet but judging from running it on my friends computer it will run fine.

Im gonna upgrade my whole computer, but my video card does need to be upgraded. but that is like the last thing i am gonna upgrade because it WILL run most of the games i play.

Because it is the most expensive component of the system...

I do have a question though. Which do you guys prefer NVidia or ATI?

Another reason my computer runs games a little slow is because my MB only has a 4x agp slot. Im sure if i got a 8x board, it would run A LOT better.

I am still running a ATi 9800 Pro 128 mb on 4x AGP. It runs well on my PC, but I am seeing others with 8x AGP who are getting 10+ fps more

I totally forgot about v-sync. I don't think it's as big as an issue with ATi cards, when compared to nVidia, but I will try it out.

Did you notice any change in quality with V-sync off?

Picked up an HIS x700 the other week for $150 or so. Its doing pretty well with everything i've thrown at it thus far. Looks like it will tide me over until i need a whole new comp.

Don't forget to flash the BIOS with the new revision from eVGA. Lots of folks are having artifact issues, but the BIOS revision takes care of it.

Miz -

The 6800 is a very good card, but I would follow Slayers lead and get a 7800 or an x800 xt.

I personally am looking into the 7800GT to upgrade from my current 9800 Pro 128 mb .

with v-sync on i was getting ~20-30 frames (average of their testing video). I turned it off, and AA 2x on, and I'm getting 50% frames between 40-60, 40% >60 frames, at 1024x768. It looks very, very good

GeForce 6800gt

Well, I will try the v-sync off in the game, but I don't want to mess with AA since my 9800 is not a super star when it comes to handling AA
