BattleStations: Midway

First, this will not win game of the year, the graphics are not earth shattering, and it will probably end up with an average review of about 8/10. But I have been having a lot of fun playing the multiplayer demo for the 360.

It is a WWII sim, but unlike most (Call of Duty, Brother in Arms, Medal of Honor, etc...) it does not involve in the invasion of Normandy

Instead you control ships (Destroyers, Cruisers, Subs, PT's, Battleships) and aircraft (fighters, torpedo planes, dive bombers, heavy bombers). Each one is unique and has different weapons, handling, etc...

Multiplayer supports up to 8 players, so there is a lot of strategy and tactics involved.

I took a battleship last night and started to bombard one of the other team's bases and it was pretty awesome zooming in and watching the salvos hit home. Then I snuck a sub up to one of their naval bases and took out a battleship. It was very satisfying

Some cool in game pics and vids:

Just prepare for a learning curve, it took me about 3-4 games before I really understood what to do and how to do it.

Maybe its me. Or that I have never been into this type of game, but I get bored of it fast. It could very well be also that we got a demo with 1 map only.

could also be you didn't know wtf you were doing

the first 2-3 times i played i was pretty bored because i didn't understand it. also, you were manning the shipyards, and i don't have a ton of fun with surface ships either.

once i figured it out i'm loving it. so much action.

i used to play Empire Earth in the WWII-Modern period alot and it reminds me alot of that but on a larger and more realistic scale.

i just wish i didn't feel so guilty for sinking an entire day into this game already

my recomendation for n00bs would be to play the Japanese team and man an Air Field. They give you the most amount of time to launch and prepare for attacks.

It took about 5 games before I really had a grasp on how the game works, but it is awesome.

Game is tough.. Going to take a few days to just learn what I'm doing.. It's pretty sweet though..

The first game I sat there trying to figure out what's going on. And had no luck. Just sat there staring at the shipyard..

well, you'll find that the freezing happens sometimes with all games. especially demos. worse for some people then others. silver freezes up all the time

but coupled with the connection problems of this one, its worse.

i froze 3-4 times this weekend.

here's some good background on tactics in the game for n00bs:

http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/756/756600p1.html

this one line sums it up well "Battlestations Midway is one big vehicular chess match."

USE YOUR MAP!

check out some of the screenshots. i can't wait to use heavy bombers tomorrow !!

more tips:

http://forums.eidosgames.com/showthread.php?t=64705

on Soloman, i've been having alot of success when i'm in control of both carriers (or both airfields), assuming the players in control of the shipyards are good at doing their part.

when american, i immediately send out a fighter squadron from each carrier, and then 2 dive bombers from each. i send all the dive bombers and one fighter on their way to the japanese shipyards, and i send the other fighter squadron to intercept any incoming torpedo bombers.

wiht the first squadron of dive bombers i release my bombs (ive started taking out the northern shipyard first since this is where the battleships come from), and then i use that squadron to take out the islands AA.

usually i can destroy all the AA by the time the 3rd squadron drops its bombs.

by doing this i only lose 1 squadron of planes and i take out the battleship yard in ONE wave within the first 2 minutes of the game.

i did this over and over last night, worked great.

with that shipyard gone and the islands AA out, you can send in another wave to destroy the second shipyard without any casualties.

this leaves our navy with few adversaries and pretty much a free ride up to the airfields.

i then focus entirely on fighters, sending fighters to the airfields to keep the enemy on the ground and take out AA.

as anyone tried out boat formations?

the thread answers an only semi-related but important question for me, how to select individual planes in a squadron. apparently up/down on the d-pad does it, although i swear i tried this very thing last night

such a complex game. i love it.

I read about the formations last night and can't wait to try it. Send a pair of battleships in formation at their ship yards
