Cool AMD Eyefinity = The New Hottness!

This is Left 4 Dead played on three 30 inch monitors powered by one Radeon HD 5870 graphics card that merges them into one "virtual" monitor with a 7680x1600 resolution! Windows thinks it's one monitor with a really wide resolution! The first release will support 3 monitors but later they'll add a 6 monitor solution!

$380 on Newegg, not bad considering what it can do

$380 Damn. I was fairly set on going a bit nuts and getting two 4890's when I build my new Win 7 machine. Now I'm thinking maybe I should just do one of these.

They say it's got almost twice the performance of the 4870 but stays within the same power envelope. At idle it uses 27w compared to 90w of the 4870.

I may pick up the 5850 when I rebuild, it's $259 which was less than I paid for my 8800GT which was considered a steal when it was announced. glad they aren't charging $600 for graphics cards anymore.

Also from the looks of things, based on how many generations of video cards that have gone by I'm due for an upgrade.

actually I'm coming up on needing to replace my computer.
Come December it'll be 3 years old.

Still running a core 2 duo e6600 4gb ddr2 ram 1.1TB HD, radeon x1950xt

doesn't even seem like it needs to be updated.

My old computer built in 2002 badly needed to be replaced in 2006.

Yeah my local community college has had this for about 4+ years in a few areas in the arts department.

Honestly I could only see myself doing this with maybe browsing, or doing anything other than playing games. IMO seems if something pops up in the far left monitor, you focus on that, then you won't be able to even see anything in the far right. I dunno, I'll just see how it turns out.

hey I'm still using a pent4 2.6, 1.5gb ddr2, 0.8tb hd, radeon s9250 and I'm happy. I can run dual monitor, but I have a 32" and a 19" so it wouldn't really work to well.

I don't understand how this is different from TripleHead2Go that Matrox has had for 2 years now.

Dunno what triplehead2go is but this looks like it's optimized for games, and it can support up to 6 monitors.

It's better than the matrox offering cause the matrox is limited to the max input resolution of a dual link dvi connection. The matrox has one input that it can spread amongst 3 outputs. So you're limited by the max resolution of the input which it would then stretch and make look like ass amongst 2 or 3 displays. The AMD doesn't require an add-on and you can drive 6 separate monitors at their native resolutions using one card where it used to take 3 graphics cards to do this. You can drive six 30 inch monitors in a 3x2 setup as one big ass monitor with just one card allowing for a max 7680x3200 resolution!

are you sure about the 1 card?

i thought you would need 2 in sli to get 6 displays because 1 card has only 2 DVI ports and a display port.

i havent read much into eyefinity so i dont know.

if you overclock your e6600 and pop in a new graphics card it'll be basically almost as fast as any c2d system out there except for the new i7 generation quads. you can also get the q9550 2.83ghz quad at a local socal microcenter for $170 + tax if your motherboard supports it.

i'm almost have this exact same setup... now all i need is a 5870 and 3 30" monitors

boy am I glad I didn't get a top-end video card with my Core i7 - instead I got the base model whatever (HD4350) knowing I would upgrade later.

in other news, Dell announced Core i7 laptops 2 days ago.

FYI - http://www.hardocp.com/ currently has a lengthly video on this. They go over the display setup, show some gameplay footage, and do a fair amount of "real world" commentary about different facets of the overall experience.
