360, PS3, Wii: Rock Band 3
Tried it in the store yesterday. Would have loved to try the key board but it wasn't hooked up yet. I was curious to know if my years of playing the piano would be beneficial in this game. Other than that the game seems pretty good but probably won't buy. I don't really play these kinds of games anymore unless there is nothing else to do.
no way in hell.
I used to be like you. until I tried it at a party. it is absolutely one of the best 4-player party games ever. add some
to the mix and the enjoyment goes up exponentially, into an eviction-possible zone.

^Died off no. Declined yes.
If you haven't played one of these find a friend that has a set up. Expensive to get into but very fun. Don't just play one song not getting it and then saying it sucks. I'm a nut for this genre and the first time I played it I was very hesitant and iffy. Finally I played through and 2 hours later I was hooked. Try the different instruments or sing if you like.
By the way, RB3 is fun as hell. I just played through the Doors songs on drums. WOWWWW. What a blast. Can you imagine at a party "Come on come on come on, touch me baby!!!!"

If Rock band 3 doesn't sell well, then it's over for the genre.
Their launch has been really messy, to say the least, and their initial sales are going to be painful to look at.
The pro modes are fantastic fun. I think keyboard < drums < guitar now.
The learning curves are exponential - starting with the training modes is practically required. But it's infinitely more satisfying than the 5 color modes.

Yeah as hard as it is pro drums is addicting. I've yet to be able to play a good long 3 hours or so. But man disco beats are hard on it. Wish I could move the snare to the middle. Ions are a little out of the budget.
I can't wait to get a keyboard and a Fender. Those modes will be fun and it'll be great learning to play

$280 - not bad at all. The mustang is great though - I'm glad I didn't wait.
It'll certainly tide me over till the Squier comes out.
I played drums for an hour or so - I liked it a lot but I need to stick with one instrument for a while.

Pros of the Squier:
It's a real guitar - you can jack it into an amp and play away.
Rock band may come and go, but you can always rock out on the Squier.
The transition from Squier to 'normal guitar playing' will be pretty minimal.
The squier works with any console, since it outputs as midi. But you need a console specific midi -> console adaptor (also sold by madcatz).
Note though, the pros of the Mustang:
it's cheaper
Playing on buttons is far less painful than playing on strings (effectively wires). The Mustang buttons are thin, so it's actually closer to playing a real guitar than you'd expect.
You can use the Mustang for normal '5 color play'. You can't with the Squier.
Get the mustang if:
1) You don't want to wait at least 4 months to play pro guitar. (it's released in march, but in limited supply so you could be waiting a while)
2) You want to play pro guitar, but don't want to deal with the 'break in time' of getting callouses. With the Squier, expect to play at most an hour a day before your fingers are too sore to continue. IF you play regularly, you will develop callouses, but until then.....
3) The squier is just out of your price range.
Me? I got the mustang and may sell it once I get my hands on a Squier. We'll see.

I know people generally aren't that interested in RB3, but it has to be said:
The squier rocks, literally. It's basically what it's advertised to be.
To quote my coworker -
'I never cared for that 5 color stuff, but this is very very cool..........This is the way the game SHOULD have been.'
One slight issue is when you play the game, you play with a string mute. This 'pops up' and pushes into the strings to stop them vibrating. The game gets confused if the strings vibrate nonstop, and may register it as extra strums.
If you decide to adjust the guitar, adjusting it for optimal gameplay isn't the same as adjusting it for optimal sound (i.e playing through an amp). I've actually pushed it towards the former.

Yeah I've been mentioning it in the guitar playing thread (you should join it) and I love it. My music knowledge in general has increased as has my guitar playing skill. This is a true bridge to really playing

I'll probably be getting these today. The keys on this game are so fun. I love going to music stores and playing the easy riff from Linkin Park In The End. Can't wait to try Personal Jesus on my Fender.
Yeah we played Personal Jesus last night. Is it different from the radio version? My wife was bored singing it and I hit it on medium pro keys and got like 97%. Very repetitive but will try on the Fender. The drums must be sick on it though.
BTW, next week a rumor states that the ultimate stalker finally arrives. Every Breath You Take from the Police. And So Lonely.
