I gotta admit, it's growing on me. Terrible sound IMO on some stuff tho. Like when the attack helicopter is spraying bullets down, it doesn't seem like its loud enough.

Call of Duty Black Ops Pilloried in User Reviews
By Matt Peckham, PCWorld Nov 10, 2010 11:18 am
Call of Duty Black Ops
For all the launch fanfare, it sounds like Call of Duty Black Ops may be suffering from Fallout New Vegas syndrome. Scan the PC version's official forums on Steam and instead of euphoric posts about the game's ballistic brilliance, you're confronted with waves of opprobrium that range from shots at the graphics and story mode to complaints about unjustifiably poky performance and crippling multiplayer lag.
"I bought into the hype from the high score on metacritic.com and got suckered into buying the game," opines one Steam user. "I really want to like it...however from the get go on a good computer...the graphics looks like it was something from 5 years ago. The charater [sic] animation and movement is laughable compare to BFBC2 [Battlefield Bad Company 2] that came out early this year."
"I did a lot of testing yesterday to try and fix my "lag" issues," writes another. "I tried all the fixes, I more than meet the system requirements, and got so jarateed [sic] off at the choppiness I created a practice game...I had the same issues with the training...THE SAME choppiness!"
A few users have posted ad hoc "fixes," but reactions are mixed about whether they work.
Some users have even taken to the boards to warn Activision that, based on forum feedback, they won't buy Black Ops until it's "fixed."
"I don't know how much time big game developers spend reading Steam forums, but they need to start taking the comments on these forums seriously if they intend on maximizing game sales..." warns a third user. "I haven't purchased BO because of the numerous problems listed on this forum. That's one less sale, and I'm sure I'm not the only one in this boat."
One frustrated user's even posted a video depicting the game failing to launch properly. After the intro completes and the game pauses at the "press any key" screen, the game appears to freeze.
Black Ops seems to be taking it on the chin at Amazon, too. Both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions are hovering at 3.5 out of 5 stars, slightly better than average, but below expected levels given mainstream critical consensus. The Windows version, by contrast, drops to a painful 2 out of 5 off 33 reviews.
"[T]his game was a huge letdown," says one reviewer of the PC version. "It is filled with bugs, laggy servers, graphics issues, and an overall 'tacky' feel. The graphics are also a downgrade from Modern Warfare 2, which is severely disappointing."
"If you have not bought this game yet, DON'T," writes another. "[T]his game is too laggy, and buggy right now."
A third reviewer praises the game's single player campaign, but says that multiplayer has "game killer flaws" and complains that the game "hangs, grabs, and stops so often that it kills multiplayer."
So a fairly broad and consistent gulf between critical and popular consensus, then.
Compare Black Ops' critical ratings on Metacritic against its user scores and the disparity's thrown into stark relief. The game's overall score, averaging 41 critical reviews, holds at 90 out of 100, but the user rating for the Xbox 360 version drops to just 6.7 out of 10, the PS3 version to 5.9 out of 10, and the PC version to a startling 5.2 out of 10.
The chief complaint? There's actually not one, but several. You'd think Steam users might be taking their technical frustrations out here, but in fact the low-scoring reviews tend to be more about the gameplay in general.
"Call of Duty will be remembered in years to come as the the point in which videogames gave up all hope of ever being considered worthy of artistic intent, of being taken seriously or of being innovative," says one reviewer. "With each new release the series gets more and more mundane, the faults get more frequent, the graphics slip further past the curve of 'current gen' and the gameplay becomes more and more linear."
Another user echoes that sentiment, writing "Single player is horrible with [the] same generic linear gameplay trying to tell a strory, [sic] but it falls in horrible ai and lazily scripted event with not even close ot [sic] enough triggers to make gameplay fluent and ai teammates...feel real."
Tough times, and a fascinating evolving example of how user reactions can potentially shift popular perception after the critics--often playing prerelease or controlled environment versions of games--speak their piece.

there is clearly an issue with the graphics, as all the reviews I have seen mention it.

Another Call of Duty Black Ops Review: Not Perfect
By: Peter Chubb | November 8, 2010 | More In: Gaming
With just hours to go until some of you will be waiting outside retail stores to get your hands on Call of Duty: Black Ops, the only thing you can do to keep yourself sane is by reading a review of the 7th installment of the franchise. We already have the opinion of one reviewer, who for the most part loved the game. We have yet another review for you, so always good to get another perspective.
Michael Menzel from Game-Pad points to the fact that COD Black Ops is meant to be the most complete game from the series. It is no secret that when it comes to FPS games, Call of Duty is usually the benchmark, so this latest game has a huge weight on its shoulders.
If we were to pick out a couple of key elements of this review, then it would be how he states that the graphics are nothing like they were on Modern Warfare 2, although they are still better than other FPS games currently on the market. However, the larger maps and being more aware of the character you play makes you get more into the game.
Apart from the issue with the graphics Call of Duty: Black Ops has evolved to become a much better game, but Menzel might not please fans of the game when he concludes that “It’s not perfect, but it’s a damn good game.” Read his full review.

one more - it's a good question, and judging from the fact that I played it for 2 hours yesterday and it held my attention, I would have to say that the graphics are not a 'game-breaker' for me. I did have my initial shock when I saw it, and you saw my reaction here, but right now, I know I will be playing more of this game, and enjoying it.

Call of Duty Black Ops: Are Bad Graphics a Game-Breaker?
By: Alan Ng | November 10, 2010 | More In: Gaming, PC
As huge fans of the franchise, we certainly don’t want to keep casting Call of Duty Black Ops in a bad light, but sometimes you just cant keep ignoring the complaints that keep flooding in.
We have reported on various reviews for the game so far, as well as some of your own user reviews which we asked you for. While it is clear that Treyarch has added a ton of content and replayability to the game which is always a huge plus for any big game release, it seems as if the graphics within Black Ops are a huge let down.
We’ve heard reports that the graphics are a major step back, even ‘cartoony’ as one of our users calls it, probably refering to the Nuketown map, which we agree – did seem a bit strange compared to the other maps on the disc.
Are the graphics that bad though, so much that you would consider not buying, or even returning the game? We’ve heard the term ‘game-breaker’ overused in recent times, but do you think the Black Ops graphics apply to this term?
We previously reported on how the graphics on MW2 were ‘much better’, but we’re interested in hearing your final say on the matter. Are the below-par graphics really a big deal to you or not?

so apparently this game is running at 960x544 (2xAA) on PS3 and 1040x608 (2xAA) on 360. What do you think happens when you upscale either of those resolutions to 1920x1080?

when I reload the Enfield, it makes no sound. just shows the animation. lol
also I am reading that Ninja doesn't make as much a difference anymore because its difficult to hear others footsteps. so probably better to just not use Ninja and use one of the other perks instead.

I just played for about an hour. People were saying on that board that the FAMAS sucked but I actually like it. Finishing well on FFA, generally.

I played for about 3 hours last night. I'm not that impressed. Maybe it'll grow on me but right now, I'm feeling like MW2 is a better game.
I was immediately disappointed with the graphics and the sound... meh.
I probably won't log as many hours on BlackOps as I did on MW2.

Is there a way to mute ALL microphones? In the last version I could turn down all microphone volume I think (have not gone back to see how I did it - but I know I do not hear anyone talking. In black OPS it seems my only choice is to individually mute each 12 year old from babbling on with his F-bombs. Did I overlook a master mute all switch??

I was gonna ask you guys if the killstreaks were still OP, and I still ask that question even with this video, simply cause SandyRavage is too OP

I never get sick of watching this guy's videos.... love his play style. No fear, simply cause everyone else fears him. He's only had this game for a day, and he's ending FFAs in 3 minutes! 2nd place only got 7 kills.
My itch for this game is getting worse though it's still on and off. I want to try sticks and stones, some people were god awful at using the throwing knife, but supposedly the tomahawk is even easier to use...
oh and RC car is a 3 kill streak? I think I'd rather have Spy Plane, though the RC would be useful for multiple campers

He was using lightweight. And all his videos are either on Xbox or PS3 (that vid's from a 360)
And if it matters he finished a FFA on Wasteland with a gun he didn't even like much in 2 minutes

I think this game is like 80% of MW2. It's a welcome change, the maps are good, and it's nice to have some new weapons, but not as smooth and refined as MW2.

Really though, I love anything but camping. "Camping" while sniping is fine or to guard an objective but even when I snipe I don't stay in one spot too long. I can't stand hardcore and no-respawn game modes, everyone moves from one room/corner to another. I'm just an overly analytical person
I have no idea, I'm guessing from the comments its an AK74u

yeah I saw it, pretty crazy. I just thought 'run and gun' was very much frowned upon by hardcore circles.
#276
and me, hardcore?!?! Hardly. I'm not nearly good enough to be a pro gamer or to be sponsored, and even if I was, I dunno if I'd want to. Playing games is for fun, can't imagine it as a job. Why else would I run around with a pistol while everyone else is using an assault rifle?

good to know! I mean, I actually try to not run and gun, just because I thought this way. Now, I won't care! haha. I have noticed on the mics that people will say stuff like "we got a camper" etc.
And, you may not think you are hardcore but I've seen your videos you may not be sponsored but I think you're pretty damn good at killing.

Well, thanks
Yeah, I mean I hardly get pissed off anymore whenever I get killed or whatever cause I just think about it, and I figure there's always someone better, no matter what. Connection and everything else, same. But what really pisses me off is when I see someone laying there with their gun pointed at a doorway and they shoot me as soon as I walk, er, run in

haha.
run and gun is probably the best way to win eh. I mean, you have to have the mindset that every second that goes by where you are not killing, you're losing ground. That being said, I think its important to think about how much time you are spending doing certain things, such as using killstreaks. Looking for a spot to place a turret, driving the RC car around, even looking for a place to drop the care pkg marker and then waiting for it to arrive - all of those things are not adding your kill count, and the clock is ticking.

you sort of have to run and gun in hardcore...
if you camp.. somebody will get a spy plane.. and you will be all over radar sitting in your little hideout...
the best thing to do is find the "tactical" area's to run through a map and steer clear of the wide open areas... staying on 2nd floors is also very helpful...
