360, PS3: Dead Space

Anyone getting this game? Metacritic's overall score has this game ranked as a gem...

It looks promising but I'm curious what the control scheme is. I know it is a 3rd person action game but are the controls like Resident Evil (i.e. tank-like) or is it more free moving (a la Devil May Cry, Metal Gear Solid)...?

I think this will be a rental for me as the replayability is minimal.

Though, the dead space animated comics got me super into the story, so I might change my mind if I am in the store.

Know anything about the control scheme (i.e. tank-like controls or more free-moving)...?

Here's the unrated trailer in case anyone hasn't seen it yet.

Oh, and you have to love the quote one of the devs gave during an interview "Imagine if we were to dismemberment what Burnout is to crashes."

From what I hear, it's like Gears of War or any other standard non-RE 3rd person game.

Ars Technica has their review up. They liked it. A lot.

The game is scary, impressively polished, and it knows what parts of past games to keep and which parts to wisely throw out. Some aspects of the experience, such as the dismemberment and the weapons selection, are wholly its own. The team at Redwood Shores has put together a game that starts with common ideas, but by the time it ends, you'll wonder why it took so long for someone to do horror so well.

Pick this up last night and although I only got to play for about 20 minutes, let me say that this game is highly entertaining...

The graphics are excellent, controls are tight and responsive, story seems decent so far and the weapons are very fun, especially the notion of having to kill your enemies by shooting off their limbs adds a unique twist to the game.

Was it worth the $59.99 to pick up the game? So far yes, but with Gears of War 2 and Fallout 3 coming out in the next couple of weeks, you may want to hold off until reviews come out for these games as well so you can make an informed decision if you are planning on picking up just one... (I will probably also pick up GOW2, but not Fallout, just because I am a big fan of the first GOW)

In the end if you are a fan of horror survival shooters, this game should be played regardless if you rent or buy the game.

(Replay value is supposed to be pretty good, since once you complete the game you can restart with everything in your inventory that your previous game ended with...)

this isn't much of a shooter, correct? much more of an RPG, so beware if you want a gears of war type game

Thanks for the review, ML...Question: how does the movement work in this game? For me, the concern is a Res-Evil clone (tank-like movement). Or are the movements much less constrained and the main character has alot of freedom and can move around the screen with ease?

This is very much a shooter, a little slower paced than say Gears of War, yes, but you really can't classify this game as anything else but a 3rd person shooter. Is definately not an RPG, it's a linear story line, you just play through the game, it not like you are making decisions within the game that change the outcome of the story, which is how I classify an RPG...

I would not say the character movements are "tank-like" at all. Is this the most free moving character ever (i.e. Solid Snake) no. You can't jump, crouch, crawl, but I don't feel that lack of movement takes away from the experience of the game. The run mechanic is done fairly well and the character's movements within the environment of Dead Space are very smooth. There is no auto targeting(which I like) but the aim mechanic is outstanding and very accurate. I also like the camera angle and how the camera zooms to an over the shoulder view when you are targeting/shooting...

Thank-you...I just needed first-hand experience and feedback. I was worried I was picking up a Res-Evil clone. And I think after playing 4 of RE games, I'm pretty much done with the tank-like move controls (yes, I know Capcom's argument that the "harder" moving adds to the stress of playing it; but am not a fan of it)...

Looks like it'll be a pickup for me.

shitttt, i'm an idiot lol. got this confused with fallout 3 hah, so I stand much corrected.

and yum, just watched a video review on ign and it said something about there being no quick turn ability, perhaps on purpose to leave you vulnerable lol.

Well, I've only played it a little so far, and I don't like it all that much. I'm a big fan of the FPS games like Halo, COD, etc. This is just a little too "off" for me. I'm going to play it some more tonight, see if I change my mind. I didn't bother writing up a review as ML's review was pretty much dead on, no pun intended.

I just finished this game (on the PC) and thought that it was great. I had gotten a few games at the same time (including COD5 and Left 4 Dead) and tried each one of them and this one was definitely a winner as far as single player mode goes. I'm not sure if it's the fact that you're not really a "hero", but just a regular guy fighting with mining tools, but it was entertaining from start to finish. Only played a couple of hours of Fallout 3 and finished about 10% of Far Cry 2, but this one I couldn't put down.

I'd definitely recommend it to everyone who likes horror games. The keyboard controls are horrobile, so I used the Logitech Rumblepad 2 wireless controller. Also, the replay value is there as well. It took me about 12 hours the first time through. Now that I've unlocked "impossible" mode, i wonder how much longer a replay will take me.
