What wheels in Chicagoland...
We all know potholes in Chicagoland... huge, deep and been there forever...
Costs to replace / fix our wheels are big $$$
Q to Chicagoland Acuraziners... what wheels do you have, planning to buy ? 18", 19" ?
I'm thinking about buying a set for summer 18s or 19s but I'm actually afraid of driving in IL !!! I already had to replace stock rim because of a huge pothole on Hwy 88 and luckily dealer replaced a shock as a warranty repair.
Or I should just forget about it and stay with OEM ?
How about insurance covering wheels, because of road hazards. Any of you has it ?

i tried the rim thing, bought civic si 17" rims w/ brand new michelins for only $500...and that was too much for me...i hit a pothole and got a flat tire, all b/c i didn't pay attention to this one concrete lip sticking up [it was a very odd pothole!!]
luckily there was no damage to the rims or other 3 tires and i was able to sell them all for $450, so i only lost $50 b/c of these chicago potholes!
now I personally will be staying OEM for quite some time, but if you really want rims, my advice to you is to get the best tires possible that can handle big bumps [no low profiles!!] and also you really have to pay attention to everything when you drive!!
good luck tho b/c if you buy expensive rims, unlike my fortunate situation where i didnt spend too much, you might lose alot of money with one stupid pothole if you dont get the right setup.

RIP Dime...
Be careful, especially if you're dropped. I'm pretty low and I haven't bent a wheel yet in two years. Any time I see a road "irregularity" i slam on my brakes to make sure no damage is taken.

^oh so you're one of those drivers hitting the brakes out of nowhere...gotcha...I say stay OEM to avoid headaches, or put some badass rims on a car that is not a Chicago daily driver...just make sure you dont learn the hard way like i did.
[and trust me I was as careful as the next guy, but when there is a lip of concrete sticking up about 3 inches blending in as the road goes downhill, well you wont know what hit you...being careful only goes so far because in chicago, you are not just looking for normal, easily-seen potholes...]

ok i will tell you that i have 22's on my RL. and i live on fully and oak park. i have no issue's with pot holes. am just like dj... i keep my eyes open for massive holes and and slow down. i don't drive reckless. so my advice to you is watch where you drive and you will be fine. don't go nuts. and your rims should last.

Buying aftermarket rims will cause you to take detours voluntarily sometimes but its all good... looks so much better than stock!
Touhy by Ohare is HORRIBLE. I avoid that at all costs... I don't care if I have to drive an extra couple miles.
Just know your routes (if possible) and be mindful of where potholes are on regularly traveled routes.

Just a word of suggestion.. if you plan on running low pro's (35 or lower series).. I would suggest getting them a bit wide. Jason (jmkiang) is running 245/35/19 on his..
I'm running 215/35/19 and I have a couple bends in my outer lip from trying to avoid potholes..

Yes! I have to drive through that garbage everyday! I now just take touhy, its out of the way, but i don't have to worry about messing up my alignment. Still don't understand why they removed the top layer, and haven't fixed it!
