Question for the Audi guys here: What grade of fuel do you put into your car? MOST gasoline stations where I'm at offer 91 octane but I found a few that have 94 and have tried it. It would appear the S5 is a bit more fuel efficient with this grade of gas...? Or is it just in my head...?
Anyways, just asking. I've had 91 in the tank since ownership but the last couple of weeks, I've been putting in 94 and it seems a bit different. Can't say for sure since I'm not exactly racing the car but it's the standard local driving. The First Lady feels the same in regards to better fuel efficiency.

But, it's proportionally the same as going from mid-grade 89 to 91. Filling up the S5 is about $50ish CAD...so, about ~$40USD.

That's cheap!
The RDX is always about $50 USD.
If it yields better results and if the fraction of money spent over mid-grade is worth it, by all means!

You have a forced induction engine with a fairly high compression ratio
..and you're saying it's more efficient with higher octane fuel eh?!?
Ah octane threads..
You're not imagining things. What's occurring is the lower octane fuel is causing detonation / knock.
Your engine management system is like whoa.. fuck this shit.. so it pulls timing and possibly drops boost.
When it pulls timing.. spark is occurring at a less optimal threshold.
This allows for the fuel to cool down the cylinder and help prevent detonation
Otherwise it could lead to a domino effect.
The consequence of this is reduced power and inefficient burn of fuel.
In many cases, unburnt fuel is actually sent down the exhaust where it does damage to your primary cats.
Again, you and the misses are not imagining things.
Using lower octane is shitting on your powahs and mpgeees.
