Yet another reason not to get a BMW...

This one is posted by a member of tl.acurazine.com.

BMW quality is as good as ever. At the bottom of that thread, there are links to a bimmer forum and apparently this isn't the first time this has happened. Crazy...

Now we know where Chris Bangle got the inspiration for his "flame" line of thought...

Do the seats heat up faster than they do in the TSX? If they do then I'm willing to risk it. A burned butt is a warm butt.

Yeah these cars do warm up faster than the TSX. The Mercedez literally takes two seconds to heat the seats.

None of the CR-V fires have caused injuries.

Plus, when the fire is literally right on your ass, I'd be worried too.

Seriously, you can't spare one company because you like the brand. A car catching on fire underneath the body where you can't see it is potentially more dangerous than feeling your ass on fire.

All i can say is, damn....We had a heated seat problem on our Escalade, but nothing like this. The front passenger's seat heater simply wouldn't turn off, it went on by itself, and it stayed on after the car was turned off, draining the battery. It was fixed under warranty, and was nothing more than an annoyance (arriving at BWI at 1am to find the car dead sucked), but nothing was burnt!

I't been cold so I've been driving around for the last few days with the Acura's seat heaters on and I could barely tell. Safer than the Eurocars, I suppose, but...

I first heard of this problem in a Saab 99 in the 1970s; there are occasional posts about it over on the Volvo boards. A little disconcerting to see a burning hole appear in the seat right by some of one's own favorite parts. Volvo has a seat heater recall out on some, but not all, years of the 850. Apparently the seat heater failure rate was just "too high" for the Feds.

It's official.

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - BMW AG will recall some 75,000 of its 5- and 7-series cars after problems were discovered with front-seat heating mats, the German luxury car maker said Tuesday.

Seat mats could overheat in certain circumstances, damaging the surrounding upholstery and possibly resulting in slight burns, a spokesman said. The defect is limited to the seats and does not affect other parts of the automobile.

He put the estimated cost of the recall at 16 million ($21.7 million).

Meh, that goes without saying. PR's are nothing more than advertisement disguised as news; and in cases like BMW, they're simply damage control.
