XJ8 for college graduate

I am graduating college in December, and I plan to lease a Jaguar XJ8. Do you guys think its an appropriate ride for my age?

Lease a new one? There are more fun cars out there for the price.

Hell go for a StypeR if you want a jaguar.

Oh I'm going to have disagree there, the Stype is simply a tired dated looking car and the interior is very stuffy.

I would even go with a new XJ8 over an Stype R......all 06 XJs have the wire mesh grille (looks great). Get a nice color, light tint and you're set.

The incentive to getting an XJ8 is that they simply lease out like champs.

No other $65k luxury car leases out as well.

My mother had a Jag XJ8 from 2000-2003, the car was in the shop once a month, way too many problems with that car. However they do look great. I would look into leasing a new 07 E92 335i or E90. That would fit your age better and a lot more fun to drive too.

Indeed they are, the XJ is a real nice car.

Current deal (take that $4k down add it back to the payment). You're at around $780/month for 24 months, just have to deal with your State tax.

That's a great deal, all relatively speaking of course (as $780/month is a still a big nut for most).

Not sure how the program would change if you decided to go 36-39 months.

2006 Jaguar XJ8
$699/month
$3,999 due at signing
24-month lease. Security deposit waived. Excludes taxes, title and license fees.

New and previously untitled vehicles only. After $3,400 Jaguar Cars Lease Cash and $1,125 Jaguar Credit Conquest Lease Cash. Not all lessees will qualify for lowest Jaguar Credit lease. Payments may vary. Residency restrictions apply. Take new retail delivery from dealer stock by 07/06/06. See your local dealer for qualifications, details and compatibility with other program and incentive offers, or call 1-800-4-JAGUAR.

The X350 platform (aluminum body) came out in 2004, a much better car than the ancient XJ it replaced.

Well, for those that do know...........it is a fact that Ford indeed helped Jaguar a great deal.

If it wasn't for Ford, Jaguar most likely would have gone under.

Simply put, Jags under Ford are much better than the Jag's not under Ford (they were electronic nightmares).

The X-Type aside, that's a Ford Mondeo (doesn't count). The early cars were not so reliable, it helped boost Jag sales but certainly tarnished Jag's image.

For the money, go German. The XJ is a nice car, but its performance is nothing to write home about. A 550i 6 speed is about the same price and rewards the driver much more.

We had a 98 XJR that was awesome. Never had any problems with the car and it ran hard up to 120k when we sold it. Talking to other Jag owner before the Ford take over and listening to their horror stories is something that I'm glad we never had to experience.

1. The XJ8 is a luxury car

2. The 550i is a sport sedan. Not as luxurious as an XJ8.

3. My oldman has an Alpine white 550i, good luck getting a 24 month lease for $780/month with just tax out of pocket. Not going to happen.

Lease wise they are not the same price.

Last time I checked the 550i was a luxury sedan. The 550i might not be as luxurious interior wise, but the interior is more driver orientated. Secondly, the performance of the Bimmer blows away the Jag. Why lease for 24 months? Go with a 36 month lease. IIRC my dad pays low 700s for his 545i for 36 months with 0 down. BMW covers all maintenance for the car as well.

Absolutely! Cars, especially Jaguars, are great investments! Maybe in a few years you can sell it and pay back all your loans.

You never know.....My friend Blake got an amazing job at McKnnsey after college. He didn't buy a car though, since he is hardly ever in town during the week to use one.

It means that if you have a good job and are smart about your financial assets, what he stated isn't always true.

A friend of mine is 22 and has an SRT10 Viper. Since I've known him he has also owned 2 M3s and a C5 Z06. I seriously think his family has an oil well in Saudi Arabia.

Being smart about financial assets would be the exact reason not to get this car.

Its a beautiful car, and I'm sure its worth the cash, but personally I'd wait a year and save up some $$ before getting locked into something like this. I'm assuming you already have a job lined up, so what if you don't like it? Large car payments are a bitch if you want to job hunt.

Build up a decent savings account, start a retirement fund, buy some stocks. Get some nice shit for your house/apt. Then get the car.

This is just what I wish I had done a couple years ago... I went through a CL type S and an S2k and a bunch of mods and stereo shit...now I have nothing to show for either.

Although I have no idea what your situation is... if moneys not an issue, yeah sure its a nice car. I'd get something sportier, M45 probably, but thats just me.

I've done most of what you mentioned and want to buy a house sometime soon, but I also bought a new car. I didn't buy a Jag, but rather my 05 Mustang GT. Cars aren't the best financial investments(I use investment loosely), but you gotta do what makes you happy in life. Driving my car puts a smile on my face.

It is though feasible to lease a 60K dollar car for 3 years and still save money and invest depending on the job he has lined up. The problem is after 3 years you have nothing to show for it, equity wise. He could be living at home too.

Yeah, nothing wrong with spending your money, thats what we work for. I just think it makes sense to wait a little while before getting locked into any big expenses.

The difference between the lease on this Jag and say a Subaru Legacy would add up to $12,000 over two years. That makes for a nice down payment on a house, a new car, or just a nice stash in case shit happens.

I agree. If I had spent all my money on sound financial investments I wouldnt be able to enjoy my modded car or trips abroad.

Im pretty sure everyone agrees its all about balance. Taking on that kind of a car payment this early in the game is dumb. You can get something nice you can enjoy for a lot less than that.

I don't disagree and as my dad always says "I've never seen a hurse with a luggage rack".

I personally would buy a cheaper car and invest/save for a while in this case. I invested last year in some property just south of Phoenix. I've had little "spending money" for a while, but if everything works out as planned I can pay off my car and have a really nice down payment for a house.

XJ's are wonderful cars. We had 2 of them (99 XJ8L and 01 XJR) and only had one problem (starter in the L). It's your money....if you want one, get one.

The good thing about the XJ is that Jag dealers will deal on them and it's quality/reliability have gone way up since Ford took over. Another item about the XJ that no one seems to notice is how good the audio system is. If you end up getting one, make sure you opt for the Alpine upgrade.

That all being said....if I were you I wouldn't get one. For the $65,000ish ballpark you are in, at your age, I would go with one of these:

Vette
M3
GS430
Cayman S
E550
550i
