Exclamation WTF is wrong with this COBALT SS???

this is my buddy's car and he's not the brightest apple when it comes to car, nor is he persistent.

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE help me figure out wtf is wrong with this car??

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nEPw78lAPl8

this isn't his exact car, but he said this is the exact noise/problem he is having.

ONLY happens when the car is started in the morning when it is completely cold. and IF you rev the motor then it will go away..

ALSO it will go away when you rev it up..

I dunno anything about FI motors so can someone who does please give me some much needed advice.

I don't want my buddy to fuck his ride up, even if is his fault..

PLEASE... anyone?

His car should still be under warranty.

Take it to a dealer.

That engine sounds like it's going to spit something important out the side of it.

It's a chevy

In all seriousness, if someone else is having the same issue on youtube, the dealer has dealt with it before. Tell him to take it in

If it's under warranty, he should be able to leave the car overnight and get a rental loaner.

Then the next morning they'll start it up and a piston will shoot through his hood.

Sounds like this...

But it's more likely the timing guide and tensioner, a known issue with the Cobalt SS engine.

Why doesn't he get that he needs to take it to a dealer ASAP? Did he mod it? GM is giving customers holy hell about mods lately....

Piston slap, maybe, or a bad lifter. I don't think its a bent rod because the noise goes away with higher RPMs

he's got a CAI on it right now, and needs to change it back to oem b4 taking it in.

I kno, he's been loafting on this for SEVERAL MONTHS now. and even though I told him from what I know, i thought it's timing related or a bent valve, or something to do with the supercharger, which was a guess really, even still he's yet to bring it to them and made a point of making sure it makes that noise....

he's like.. well yo if it breaks, they'll fix it anyways.

I'm laughing at this point and told him that will just make life hell if you do.

So hopefully my word played a roll in changing his mind.

Cause that noise sounds BRUTAL

If it goes away when it warms up or when the revs increase, it is definitely NOT a rod/piston/valve problem.

I'm with neuronbob, the dealer should check for that timing guide and tensioner issue first. Past that, maybe the blower lobes are out of spec and hitting the side of the casing. That's a longshot though.

yea the car holds boost fine, and the noise comes when it's cold and is driven for a few miles, then it's ON.

I'm leaning with you guys on the timing issue thing.. cause that noise seems to be coming from the heart of the car, so that'd be a good place to start.

I'm going to keep haggling him to get his ass over there pronto. hopefully it's b4 the problem cause a EAL problem

yea but does this problem come and go or what?

Cause i've seen the car multiple times and never heard that noise..

However I did notice his supercharger was oddly loud... like a grinding noise actually.

I learned something from the video, TheMirror. Thanks!

CL-S, you buddy is silly if he won't go to the dealer. A CAI won't void his warranty and if he's afraid that his dealer is a hardass, and has the know-how to take it off, why doesn't he? That sound would drive me bananas.

funny thing is it's driving him mental too.

and he still hasn't gone.. i told him to get his ass there today since he is off... but

think it is safe to say it is the supercharger like that video showed?

cause he brought it in way back when this originated, the dlr said they fixed the issue it was a timing tensioner or something... and then 2 weeks or something it came back.

So maybe that was or wasn't the problem?

I dunno, you tell me.

Assuming you were going to tackle this urself. what would you be look at?
