Wrangler? Opinions needed Thanks!

So I've finally narrowed my search down
I'll be getting a pickup for work in the near future but not till beginning of 2013..
In the meantime I got some cash and I want a wrangler!!!!
I'm looking at 1999-2003ish Wrangler's
never owned one or drove one.. Would like to know what kind of stuff should I watch out for?
Automatic or manual v6 or v4 one and I know they run forever if maintained but are 80-120xxx miles good if it seems fairly well kept?
Also anyone know where I could get some good aftermarket parts
- Thanks a ton
Rohit

The Wrangler would be my fun toy mostly for the winter cos I got more than enough power with my tl already have a speeding ticket . I'd just lift it get bigger rims/tires and do small appearance mods. Quick noob question how bad is manual in city drive I'm almost always in some sort of traffic and I can drive manual but this would be my first real manual car so sort of like my practice toy if I went manual.

I had a 02 auto sport before my TL, I loved it. I had no issues with mine at all in the 4 years I had it. Only matinence items I did was a tune up and oil changes, but it had pretty low miles on it. A good place for parts is Quadratec.

If you get one get a soft top and a manual V6, you won't regret it.

I have never had one, but, reliability seems to be a big issue with them from past hearsay.
You know what kind of fun you can have with it too.

We have a 2010 and one of our friends just picked up a 1999. Definitely get the V6 and go for the stick if you're looking at an older Jeep.

We love ours and I know they love theirs. Ours is a weekend toy as well, and it is a ton of fun...

Here's our 2010...

EkSoni,

I have a 2005 that I'm selling. It only has 62k miles on it. It has a modest life with 33 inch tires. It's in really good condition. It's been in my garage the entire time I've owned it (due to fear of someone slicing the top). Speaking of which, it doesn't leak and the top is taunt. It does have the inline 6. The only problem that I'm aware of is that the CD player stopped working, however the radio works. I recently had it appraised by Carmax and it received "good" (the highest they give) marks in every category.

The reason I'm selling it is because I have a 8 month old kid and it's not functional for our needs. I'm the second owner and purchased it before we knew about the baby on the way.

FYI, the manual is very easy to drive.

You can PM me if you'd like more information and details.

i had a 2001 that was an auto and and it was one of the most fun vehicles I have ever owned. Never had any problems with it. Lost it when I got hit by a drunk driver.

Junior...jeez how many cars do you have. I seem to have very similar tastes as you.
I am currently negotiating with wifey to get a wrangler as well

Ugly, featureless, and poorly constructed interior. Next time you look at one pull back the top where it attaches to the rollbar and note that they don't even bother to paint the entire bar. Very cheap IMHO.
If you are looking for an inexpensive toy that just needs to get you from the road to the fishin' hole than the Jeep might be a good choice.
If you want a real 4WD with the all the comforts that your TL has to offer, a Mercedes G class is the best answer.

The G's have enough of their owns issues...and they are pretty bare bones minimalist if you're going for the older models...

And to top it off the used prices are WAY WAY WAY more than Jeep...with LARGER repair bills.

fucking jokester

@ the g wagon, i never understand why someone would choose one. Wasn't it car and driver that just pointed out that they don't paint the rollbar or have they done this for years?
I don't like jeep products, but the wrangler would be my choice over the g.

Wrangler's arent that bad and I'm not looking to spend a lot besides IMO a G ruins the whole offroad fun one can have with a wrangler nevertheless thanks

I bought a used 1999 v6 sport automatic back in 2002. I drove it for a few years and then gave it to my dad. He still has it. Over 70,000 miles and no major problems. Very reliable, useful, lots of fun, but not good on gas.

Here is a recent pic. The hardtop was orginally a dark brown but it was fading bad. We had it painted black.

Very well kept! The thing with me is budget is main and how the wrangler is overall in condition.. Idc if its pink I'll pay to repaint using dealer discount and it'll get lifted and some other cosmetic mods but other than that I'll drive it all the time when I don't need the space.

So little update I got two possible options,
Option one a 99 auto v4 102xxx miles hardtop & softtop included this one is all stock bought for a girl who recently passed away..
Option two a 99 or 00 I believe manual v6 sahara 140xxx softtop only comes with 33 inch tires some extra lights and its been rust proofed recently this is a local dealer

Both are a few hundred dollars away from each other

They have an I4 and I6. No V4 or V6. Get the 4.0 and don't look back.

I like the G, it is a temperamental but capable machine.. you either 'get it' or you don't.
