For the record the last two german cars I have owned have been more reliable than the last 3 japanese vehicles I have owned.

EDIT: The 4th (vehicle) japanese motorcyle - very reliable. Too bad the four wheel vehicles were not.

Hope not!!! While I like the blue, I personally would only go for white or silver....for ease of cleaning.

I just thought it was funny that you thought they would make the car available in only one color

It's "predecessor" the R32 came 4 colors IIRC.

The R32 calipers were blue

If this was the case, I would still buy it because it's the Golf R.

Anyone done a comparison of the Golf R against the STI? Pricing is similar.

In a few years when this type of question is not asked anymore I'll get a VW as a daily driver.

Have you ever seen " would you buy a Honda, Toyota, Subaru, Mazda?" thread. Most people are too busy to be checking oil constantly with GTI' turbo engine or have the cash to do DSG service every 40k. I take that back, maybe they have the time but most people I work with dont have the cash. So they are people off with a appliance of a car. For now the compromise between performance and strong reliability is still better in favor of Japanese brands. And thats where I ended up. For weeks and weeks I had debated Mazda3 or VW Golf. I baby my car and thought to myself if I dont baby my VW is it going to hold up nicely past 100k?

GTI with Autobahn package is pushing 31-32k already. Don't know how bare bones a base Golf R will be in terms of equipment, but you're getting AWD and about +60 hp and tq. True, pricey, but I don't think it's ridiculously overpriced.

We have experienced a total of 4 tranny failures in our VW's amongst an abundance of other issues.
which is why when people get new tranny's it still goes, they couldnt fix the damn thing

The golf R will have a lot standard. Leather seats included. The only options i can really think of is navi sound system and i dunno if they are putting xenon headlights as base? Or sunroof.

GTI + 5K you can be be in the 11s in the 1/4 (APR has a setup)

But the difference is AWD vs FWD. I personally wouldn't want an 11 second FWD quarter mile racer as a daily driver.

I wonder about the LED tails the most. If VW is willing to put R&D into making it DOT compliant, then they could probably put it in the GTI as an option. Those LEDs are sexy as hell!

yea I've heard that also. Too much $$ for them to make a set a taillights suitable for the US for a limited production car. Sucks, but not surprising.

Europeans get to have all the fun!...

My sister's 99 Passat is at 172K+ miles and still going. Currently she's driving 1k miles a week and the car's running like a champ. Not to say that it hasn't had issues in the past but overall it's been just as good as any other car. Too bad the turbo's blown or else it would be a great car.
