workers can still own other makes...they just have to park across the street...big deal
with all the discounts that ford gives to their employees they'd be stupid to buy anything else

I recall that the Linden GM plant had a similar parking rule mandating that only American cars (Ford, GM, Chrysler) branded cars could park in the employee lots closest to the plant. That GM plant is now closed.

TO FORD WORKERS (@ that plant): Volvos are very nice cars.

My neighbour where I used to live worked at the Brampton Chrylser plant but drove a 97 Vette. They would not allow him to park in certain areas at the plant. There were apparently designated parking areas for non Chrysler vehicles.

you know after reading the article, domestic co's are a bunch of fucking retards. so this is their big plan??

"You buy what you build," said Rufus McWilliams. "That only makes sense."

wtf? do these people live in the 50's and 60's??

and they wonder why they are doing so poorly with this mindset

Nothing new... You should have heard some of the stories coming out of detriot back in the 70's when people would show up in an import at some of the plants

Officials with UAW Local 600, who backed the announcement, are scheduled to conduct talks with management next week to finalize the details and discuss expanding the ban across the entire Rouge facility, union president Jerry Sullivan told CNNMoney.

"There has to be something put in place to grab people's attention and to make a statement that this is a serious thing," said Sullivan, whose union represents approximately 8,000 workers at the larger Rouge complex. "It's up to us to stand up and do what is right and to drive a vehicle from the company you work for."
There's no way they can get away with that. Have they gone completly insane. All it will take is a lawsuit.

This is new in that in the past, these bans would only involve non-UAW/foreign cars. This ban would effect UAW built GM and Chrysler vehicles. It is so stupid, you can expect other UAW plants at GM to do this now that Rouge has crossed the line first.

I had a friend that was fired by a local Ford dealership because he purchased a Camaro when in 98 when GM dropped an LS1 in it.

This is messed up to us, however the kind of people that work in US auto plants have a very troubling mindset. This makes sense to them.
The fact that the union & workers approved it mans they don't have a problem with it. Maybe a small minorty do.

All this does is codify existing norms. It's like me putting a bumper sticker on the back of my Acura: "I drive a foreign car because I'm an asshole." I know that's what most people on I-75 think anyway.

You won't be finding Mazdas, Volvos, SAABs, Jags, etc in much quantity at Ford or GM plants.
HQ, yes, but not the plants. Oh ... and the Ford and Visteon plants don't have that many Mercury or Lincoln cars sitting outside either. They really are "TRUE BLUE" Ford oval workers.

I don’t see what the big deal is, GM does the same exact thing.

When I was out in Bowling Green, KY to pick up the Vette we got a VIP tour of the factory.
To get to the tour entrance you have to go around to the back of the building.
As an employee if you drive a Corvette, any year, you can park right up front by the door.
Doesn’t matter if you’re an executive or the guy that mops the floors in the bathrooms.

The next lot out is for GM vehicles.
It’s basically 2/3 of the parking area and quite full.

The next lot waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay out by the road is the “other cars” lot.
Park your non-GM vehicle there and it’s a good 5 minute walk to the door.

Pretty much true. I wouldnt call it troubling mindset but they like to support the companies that were able to give them work.

All i see in MI are american cars...im sure not all of them work for them but they still support their economy by buying.

I think it's a good idea, people should support and be proud of the product they are helping to build. Those people will be the best sales/marketing folks you can get.

They will also be way more inclined to fix/report minor issues with the vehicle directly to the company.

It's a win/win in my book.

I'll admit it's a bit strict as some people will want to own other vehicles and drive them to work occasionally.

I really think the movement is all about team building... if everyone working for Ford isn't onboard with them as a company it will hurt them.

And BTW the title of this thread is so DQ it's not even funny. Maybe edit it to say "drive to work" or learn how to read. Ford workers can own any vehicles they want. What they can park in the lot at work is in question.

The Detroit area's market is explained by the proliferation of employee and employee family and friends of family and neighbors of friends of family of employee discount programs. You might get tiffed that all the fake numbers in the Detroit News advertising is "EMPLOYEE SPECIAL PRICING" only, but if I really wanted, I could get the discount program price for a Chrysler, Ford, or Pontiac.

The rest of Michigan is largely explained by legacy loyalty to Detroit product, even though plants all over the state are closed and these cities don't have to buy Buicks anymore. Michigan's deteriorating economy means a lot of people find that cheapo Ford and GM used cars are just as good as any other, especially for pothole smashin'. :shakehead

It's hard to find a import dealers in Michigan unless you know where to look, and just because you find one doesn't mean they're any good. Outside of the Detroit/Ann Arbor area [home to 4 Acura dealers, pretty damn good for a 4-5 million regional metro population] ... well, Honda and Nissan have several dealers along the I-94 corridor and they're not shabby up in the Grand Rapids area. In other states, Toyota showrooms look like palaces.
In Michigan, Toyotas are sold out of sheds out back of the Pontiac/GMC lots.

Nope, many states are right to work states, you can fire for ANY reason or no reason short of age/sex/gender/sexual orientation.

As for the thread, the UAW were the ones that ASK for this, so Ford just complied with the workers wishes.

I like Ford. Just not the American versions.

I'd gladly take the Aussie Ford Falcon or Typhoon...or the European Ford Focus RS.

My parents buy from Glassman and service at Hodges ... except when they NEED service, then they find a way to force me to sit in Suburban Subaru's stupid sucky shitty skanky showroom with slick-suited salesscammers.

this is rediculous, next you will have supermarkets and such telling employees you can only shop here.
i would take my import to the normal parking, and when they towed/ticketed me, i'd hire a lawyer for discrimination.

who cares, only thing that is stupid is that only Ford products and subsidiary products are allowed on the lot and even other American cars(non-Ford) have to poark across the street. Ford should do what GM does and only allow American cars on its lots and have a designated parking area for foreign cars across the street. If Ford bans everything but Ford, then GM and Chrysler will follow suit and Ford will lose sales.
