Why the Hell Do I Pay So Much for Car Insurance?

I have $100k/$300k limits on my full coverage policy with a $500 deductable.

I have no accidents and only 1 ticket for 9 MPH over (1 point on my license).

I was paying $233/month. Policy renewal came and it jumped to $286/month!

I have never made an insurance claim in my life. I called and they told me it was a statewide readjustment and to call back in March when the ticket on my record is over 3 years old (falls off the record) and I've turned 25 and they will re-write the policy.

This is on a '03 CL-S.

WTF!

Steve, are you requesting all the possible discounts? Have you thought about bundling with homeowners or any other kind of insurance coverage you need?

You live too close to Baltimore
1 ticket makes a big difference

But why the fuck would it go up $53 a month?

My record actually improved since the previous policy. I had 2 tickets, now only 1. Yet my rate went up.

With the amount of S-Class and 7-Series driving around out here I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Even if I smashed a Caddilac and totaled it with only $50K in coverage I'd be up shit's creek

Well being "safer than sorry" is what buying insurance is all about.

Just wait until you turn 25, then it will be all good.

I cant say I feel your pain. Im a female safe driver - insurance companies pay me.

How is your credit? That plays a major roll now. You have an insurance credit score that is based off your actual credit. This insurance credit score you can not get, & it is only available to insurance companies.

Credit is okay. It definitely isn't top tier or anything. I've also switched companies a few times (3 maybe?) over the past 5 years shopping for different rates.

You guys are somewhat right on some things. I work for a large insurance company, so I'll state my thoughts.

100/300/100 limits should be your minimum coverage. Anything below that and you'll be paying out of pocket if you're in a serious accident.

There's no special credit score only available to insurance companies, but they do use your credit to determine your rate. My company uses a Consumer Rating Index (CRI) score which is comprised of thousands of pieces of information. Your credit, age, location, record, etc. etc. etc. This is created off the standards that my company would like to write upon, and what price they charge for certain risks. The CRI is not available or used by other companies, they have their own methods that are similar.

Unitren was the biggest rip off ever. Progressive was a close second.

With Geico I have the 100K/300K coverage on my TL and GN and pay $84/month for both with bad credit and not married. I have never been in an accident nor had a ticket.

I've heard GEICO is only a good choice if you have a clean record.

I guess I need to shop around in March when I'm 25 and *knock on wood* have a clean record.

How far is your commute? That also plays a big part in it.

We have Mercury with the same limits - 2 cars, 2 drivers + condo insurance and our total is about half of yours - in SoCal.

As mentioned, check for discounts. I forget if you have a degree, but an engineering degree usually = discount.

Don't you have a condo? If so, then your property is considered an asset which could come into play if you are in an accident where damages exceed your coverage. Consider increasing your limits.

WOW! I was wrong about GEICO.

Roughly the same policy (I dropped the rental car and towing) saved me $700 on a 6 month policy!

$1,718 w/Unitrin vs $1,047 w/ GEICO.

Payments are now $199/month (~$260 first payment)

^^^ Good it sounded like you were getting screwed, even though you were 24.

I honestly didn't notice much of a change from 24-25, not that I can complain because with good covereage I am just under $600 every 6 months.

I went from Unitrin to Geico also. Unitrin kept jacking up my payments for no reason. By the time I switched to Geico, my payments were about half of what I was paying.

when I moved to hawaii, my rates were about half of what they were in california. When I bought a new car from roughly 5k car to 15k car and went down to a $500 deductable it went up like $30 a month though . But still nothing close to what i was paying in LA, when I was only driving a 3k car w/ a $1000 deductable.

Blame Actuarial tables ... It's not about you. It's about a bunch of objective criteria that you match that produces a score that then you get bent over for ...

I pay like $600 a year more living in DC than if I were in Maryland. Even though I park in a garage and have a signed lease that says so, DC has a really high auto theft rate ... Therefore, I get hammered.

The whole thing is just BS but not much you can do.

My buddy has been with State Farm for 15 years and recently got a couple of tickets that totalled 5 points. Prior to that he's been a good boy.

They sent him a letter that his policy was being cancelled.

They just ain't fucking around anymore.

WOW! You guys do pay alot for auto insurance. I pay $3,9XX/yr for full coverage on four cars: 05 Murano, 07 AV6, 00 Quest, 98 Civic EX....and I live in NJ.

Factors in my favor:
- 39 y/o
- married (38 y/o wife)
- homeowner
- clean driving record
- "lower risk" vehicles (though the Civic costs only a few $$ less than my Accord)
- garaged in a low crime neighborhood
- good credit (not super though)
- same policy for nearly ten years (read: 15% discount)
- one accident in past ten year (wife was rear ended at a stop light -- not her fault)

i'm happy w/ my rate

I pay 1.3k a year for my car and I am
- 23 y/o
- single
- renter - bad neighborhood
- no credit (somehow I got a decent loan on my car too)
- totaled 2 cars in 2 years (16-18) (total cost to my insurance company - $27k)
- didn't shop around at all for insurance.

and before I bought my new car in august, i was only paying 800/yr.

"Consumer Rating Index"

Yeah that's what I'm talking about. Each company has their own value & bases their value on your credit.

i thought i was getting ripped off but that is just BS. i have had so many damn tickets on my record that it is hard for me to even get insurance. that is why i have a salvaged title on my integra and i only have liability. my coverage is high though i think something like 100/150/100 or something like that. what am i saying i don't even have a licence right now. fuck 4 more months.

i believe at the peak i had 20 something points on my record over 5 years just for tickets and two fender benders. i was paying something like 160$ a month just for liability. man i can't wait for my record to clean up. fuck and i am under 25 not married and i don't own a house. i guess cops just hate my car. i don't know.

Mine is only 140/Month $1000 deductible, Single Male 22 yr old. 05 TL 6SPD. I don't know how the fuck I have it that low cause on my old 95 accord it was like 250. Seems a little age and a car the beats the metrics in ontario has done me well.

I wouldn't consider that low because of the 1k deductible. Do you have full coverage?

yes to the full coverage, 1k deductible is required by insurance companies around here when under 25 it seems. I figure though if it was a 500 dedectible, and something happened that cost 1k I would fork over the cash anyways to keep the record clear so it's the same difference to me.
