Why does everyone like Suburus...I just don't get it.

I was driving home from work and this guy in a WRX was riding my ass and trying to race me. So we both hit it....we were dead even....then eventually started pulling. What I don't get is why people like these cars. They are small and ugly. I could care less if its a little faster and it may handle a little better...they are just so ugly! Are they cheap???? I'd rather have an RSX. Now I know to each is own...but I don't see the big deal!

They're great little cars with great handling and great powertrains.

They are not luxury or near luxury cars.

They are not big and roomy.

Like many Japanese cars, they have a high degree of reliability.

We love our Forester, but it's a totally different car from the Acura.

Side note: it looks like Subaru is moving a couple models a bit more upscale into the near-lux market. We'll see how that turns out.

Ya can't beat that AWD feel and the potential of the turbo for a car at that price. They don't look all that bad really.

Interior is a bit sparse however.

If I was in the market for a new car... the '05 Subaru Legacy 2.5GT is looking damn nice. Of course I'd debadge their horrible emblem from the back ^_^

I think they're gross and I would never drive one. I'd go with a Mustang Cobra instead if I want to go fast 4 cheap. I couldn't see myself buying a 4 cylinder to go fast. I couldn't agree with you more Nicky!!! Also subaru is the #1 car of choice for lesbians!!!! I just couldn't do it

There is one of those (a 2.5 RS) in our garage. My son has done considerable modifications to the suspension, added headers and a few other mods. This little ugly "bug like" car handles in and out of turns like you would not believe! With all four wheels digging in at all times and the rally like suspension he is hard to reckon with. Jumps like a friggin rabbit off the line as well. No, these are not 1/4 cars, but be very cautious of road racing one....they will eat most cars alive in the twisties!

If i was in my early 20's and had enuff money, id rock a WRX STI...better than spending money on a civic to make it faster! IMO

Drive one and you'll understand. Before I got my CL I was contemplating the WRX instead. I test drove one and fell in love. Smooth power and incredible handling. Styling is a personal choice, and, I for one like it. They are a real driver's car. The experience of driving one is totally different that driving a car like a CL. Their purposes are different. The only reason that I didnt get the WRX was because my insurance would have been obscenely high and with my gimp knee I have to drive an automatic, and IMO driving an auto AWD car just isnt the same.

the one thing i don't like about em is that when you have a flat or bad tire, you need to replace all 4 tires not just 2

I thought this too until my buddy bought one. We are not kids (39 yrs old) and I though, you've got to be kidding. It's a 25k Imprezza with a turbo. I was surprised at how refined it is in most aspects. Sure the dash looks a little cheap and yes it is as small as a civic but it is a tight and fairly smooth car and you cant beat the kick when the turbo kicks in. At 50k his car is still rattle free and the motor still pulls strong and smooth, even with dozens of 1/4 mile passes on it. He's been into the 13's and it is only lightly modified. It now has my respect.

Huh?

The owner's manual does state that the two tires on the same axle have to be within a 1/4" of each other in size or else the AWD system will get confused....but honestly, 1/4" of tire difference is a lot. You shouldn't have tires that dissimilar on any car.

On our Subaru, you can disengage the AWD system and make the car FWD by pulling a fuse. They recommend this if you are driving on a donut spare.

I used to think the STis were funny looking too, but they've really grown on me. As others have pointed out, these are purpose built rally cars that are a lot of fun to drive.

Its the functionality, the potential, and the versatility that draws people to WRX's .. I don't know many cars that can stick with just about anything through turns on pavement, stick with you in a straightaway on pavement, go drifting in the snow, and then turn off on a trail and have some fun in the woods, and be at home in all of those places. They are definetly great cars. The turbo gives it alot of potential, you can easily make 300-400 WHP and keep the car daily driven .. not to mention daily driven in shit weather. Try driving a 350WHP mustang in the snow\rain.

Have you ever looked at their engine? Its pretty unique. Flat boxer 4, everything is symmetrical. Intake mani sits ontop (symmetrical) which makes them easy to flip around and run an FMIC, two heads, 4 cams, the car is setup very well .. not to mention STi 6spd trans's are bulletproof from what I hear. They're also pretty light cars. 2700lbs I think?

I'd rock one, if I didnt want luxury.

PS - yeah the looks could use some help, but I've seen some nice ones .. JDM headlights, nice body kit, deep dish wheels, huge FMIC .. they can look pretty nice.

Im not into subarus at all, its nice to have a really fast car but the thing is a piece of crap IMO, my friend had a 01 2.5rs and for the money I thoght it was a waste. Anyone can throw a turbo into a car to make it fast but it still wont make the car better. I mean these wrxs and stis would be awesome on the track and on dirt roads but how many people are really doing that with these cars?

subarus rock...in all models and makes. you're not part of the "cult" unless you've owned one. once you do, it's hard to remove yourself from it. they tend to multiply in your garage and driveway.

I’ll look at Subaru when they offer something sporty with MORE then 4-Cylinders and LESS then 4-Doors.

SVX?

really though, the point needs to be made that subaru has this niche market cornered...high performance, good handling, AWD, economical package. what you're asking for won't be in production anytime soon, and if it ever is, will you still look at subaru when it comes out with a price tag of 30K+?

If I had money for a toy car, I'd look into modding a WRX. I'm sure they're a blast to drive around. I'd never want one as a daily commuter, but it'd be a great second car.

The WRX is actually a very solid car, its held together well. For 2005, the console has been upgraded a bit.

Rally Cars have never been great looking cars, I decribe the STi as very cool in appearance vs. gorgeous.

I will say its an extremely entertaining car, should be for what they cost. The 2005 with the accessories package MSRPs for over $33k.

Subaru's are good but fairly basic cars. Great performance for the $$.

I prefer the Evo over the STi personally though (minus the Altezza's). I have a good friend with an Evo and another friend that has a STi. I've driven both, and the Evo is more entertaining to drive. It's also faster in AutoX. The only thing I like about the STi more is the interior.
