Why buy a Toyota Pruis? Some CL's are getting 33 mpg or more!

I noticed Toyota advertises that the Pruis will get 50 mpg, but they are having a problem...they are getting only 40 mpg. Now don't get me wrong, this car has some cool engineering and all that, but hell at 40 mpg you could give up just a few mpg and get a CL-S and go to the track like we do and turn 14's and then go on a trip, cruise at eighty and get (from what I'm hearing) 32, 33 or even 34 mpg! Just a thought...that the 3.2 is quite a torque monster and at the same time so efficient out on the highway. I should say that to be fair our cars don't average 32 or so, but damn it's not like we can do 14's but only get 12 mpg or something.

I saw my best mileage ever in my CL from the trip this weekend... got 360 miles before the gas light came on. But at least 300 of those miles were D5 doing 80+ on I-95, the NJ Turnpike, and the GSP. Normally driving around here in the city and to work I get 290ish. My worst has been 245. So figure 14.2 gallons used on a full tank before the light comes on...

best: 25.3mpg
average: 20.4mpg
worst: 17.2mpg

My next door neighbor has had a Prius while his Benz is in the shop (ya, we laugh at him... and that dealership). He was consistently getting between 50 and 52mpg. The car really is somewhat amazing.... it seems like it "turns off" when you come to a stop... only to surge forward again when you press the gas. Has better pick-up than what you would think given a hybrid... but still nothing I could ever live with.

Funny thing though was coming back from dinner a few nights ago he accidently backed up into his garage over a spare tire that had been leaning against the wall and fell over. It must have caught the bumper at a weird angle and as he continued to back up over it, the bumper ripped CLEAN off (minus some tabs that snapped). So I jump out and literally start rofl as a stare at the entire plastic bumper laying there on the ground. Still attached to the back of the car though was a 4' wide by maybe 6" tall piece of STYROFOAM that I guess was supposed to act as a buffer between the bumper piece and the car frame. I don't think he's had the bumper put back on yet... I should go take a picture.

What a pointless post. We avg 20 they avg 40, we get 30mpg on the freeway they get 60mpg.

So why buy a prius? To fill your tank every 2 weeks instead of once a week.

The CL is not even in the same league with the Prius when it comes to fuel economy. (Come to think of it, only a well maintained, unmodified mint condition 1988-1991 Honda CRX HF comes close @ 53mpg.)

On a very serious note, if gas prices approach $3/gal I WILL buy a Prius.

I know we are partial to our cars, but you can't expect everybody out there to want one just like it. People like different things and some of them might actually like the way it looks as well as the fuel economy.

Prius batteries??

Economy aside, what about battery disposal and cost in a Prius? They only last 5 years and cost nearly 5K! I'm sure cost will come down, but NO mention regarding the hazards of battery disposal! Don't hear too much regarding those issues. By the way, 33.1 on the road-cruise at 79-80 mph, 23.5-24 in town.

Most modern cars have a styrofoam-ish 'absorber' material under the plastic bumper.

so it just popped off??? The way you described it I was thinking of the kids trying to pull the car out of the snow and the bumper explodes off.

and original poster: you smoking some good crack if you think the CL/TL has mileage that can compete with a hybrid.

17 mpg sucks....what happened to 19-27???? Has anyone talked to a Acura dealer about our in ability to get the advertised MPG????

I mentioned it to a dealer in Boston and they gave me some BS about the additives in the gas for the winter. I get that al year round.

With my 03 Type S w/ 6 Speed I usually get 23.

Best 33
Worst 20
Avg. 23

The funny thing is i get about 2mpg better on average then I did w/ my 2001 CLS w/ auto trans. I know stick shift usually get better then autos, but not according to Acuras ratings.

The EPA's MPG estimates on the window sticker are just that -- estimates for a fleet of vehicles. Your individual mileage may vary!

Getting MPG within a 10% error of the window sticker is more then reasonable.

And yes, the MPG seems to drop with winter blended oxygenated fuels.

Shit.

Man - I swore I wasn't going to add anything to this post. Damn damn damn.

I'm getting about 21-23 MPG in my CL-S... best so far is 24, not that I look every time I fill up, but my NOTICED best is 24MPG. This is with Motorkote in the engine and me not driving hard at ALL.

I gotta add - my CL-S is CONSTANTLY shifting to the highest possible gear at the lowest possible speed... I hate it. I can be going 15mph and the DAMN thing is in 5th gear!! A little ridiculous. Even my crap Lexus IS300 Tranny doesn't do that.

My only gripe on the car so far, that and the gauges are U G L Y they ain't got no alibi, you ugly, you ugly, your momma said you ugly.

don't you have to be going at least 35mph in order for you to be in 5th?

When Hybrid performance cars start to come out, you will witness INCREDIBLE acceleration times. The advantage of electric motors over gasoline is that electric has the full torque available at 1 RPM pretty much, so there is no need for transmissions for them either.

As for our cars vs. a Hybrid, Hybrid kills us in MPG. They may be having problems with them because when you include Highway miles, their MPG goes down as there is no way to recharge the batts (degenartive braking). In the city they get in the 50's where we get high teens to low 20's. You're talking 2 to possibly three times as many miles for each gallon. It's insignificant now since gas is still some what reasonable, but should it ever hit 3/gal it will equate to a lot of money.

So, like people have said before, this thread is worthless.

it takes $20 bux to fill up my scion now ($2.15 per gallon) and i ran about 350-370 miles before the light comes on. that is about 9.3 gallons for 370 miles = 39 MPG and this is mainly city driving (scion is a pain in the ass to drive on the freeway, espeially with 19")
and if u say u can get 350+ miles with 20 bux only in a CLS ($2.15 per gallon) then ur CLS must only have 100 HP just like my scion

horsepower doesn't really effect gas mileage, it's more about what kind of RPMS you hold while cruising. FOr examle, it's not uncommon at all for C5 corvettes to see 33+ mpg for highway driving.

_____________
talk about RPM? i am driving 80 MPH in my scion and guess what? my RPM is over 4000 and the engine sounds like it s gonna blow. but even with 4000+ consistantly i still get almost 50 MPG on the freeway. and if i remember correctly the CLS RPM should be just a LITTLE above 2000 at 80MPH. so scott ur saying CLS should save more gas because it cruises at 2k?

anywayz... the guy who started this shit is a fucking ________ <--- someone fill inthe blank.

Best I got on my CL was 32 MPG and that was ALL highway. From the fill-up to the next. With only about 10 stops for gas and rest stops.

Now my girls father has a Civic Hybrid. Gets 52 MPG. And it actually drives very well..

Why do you hear so much about the Toyota and not the Honda. IMO the Toyota looks like a toy that McDonalds gives away in a happy meal.. At least the Honda Civic looks like a car.

And I am not talking about that crazy looking Honda Insight either.

I like the hybrid civic. Its really hard to tell the difference between the hybrid civic and a normal civic. The hybrid civic has slightly different taillights and the hybrid sticker below the taillight and of course the cool ass gauges.
