Who has the best extended warranty?

Thinking about picking up a used car, but would like to get an extended warranty.

Any advice on which companies are the best and which ones to avoid?

German, hence the need for the extended warranty

I say it depends what car and which dealer you will be bringing the car into. Some dealers wont take 3rd party warranties.

I heard warrentydirect is pretty good. Personally I will use that money for a warranty and just keep it in a account on the side for repairs.

The known issues with my car is not enough for me to justify the price of an extended warrenty.

Can you go through the dealer with that kind of thing?

A cut and dry problem like a transmission or axle would be easy, but an intermittent or electrical issue you may run across may give the 3rd party room to screw you

My opinion, of course. I second the stashing your money in a "just in case" account.

Coming to think about it, beware that 3rd party extended warranties are rarely covered under the Magnuson-Moss act, so be sure to read all conditions and follow all required maintenance (as specified) to the letter...

I found a good deal on an 03 E500, but as a first year model, I am a little concerned.

Well your best bet is to research the 03 E500 and talk to real owners.
See what type of issues they are having. The car has been out for awhile now so im sure they can give you better input than an Acura forum.

People here will just stereotype and say benz will be a nitemare.

How about finding an E500 that is certifed preowned?

I have checked out some of the Benz forums, and it mainly seems to be electrical issues. For a first year German car it doesn't look too bad.

Thought about it, but it would be about $6K more for the comparable certified pre-owned. I couldn't justify that.

My best friend's dad had an 03 E500. Now, granted the car has 120,000 miles on it, its been a NIGHTMARE. Its sitting in their garage because it wont start and its not worth towing to a dealer to fix everything. Huge massive electrical issues with it- the driver's side headlight doesn't work routinely, with no real explanation why, windshield wiper won't work and it has this annoying habit of locking the doors while you're driving and then you can't get out, and have to climb out through the sunroof.

@ all the problems. Seems like there are a lot of electrical gremlins in E class.

@ putting nearly 40K miles a year on the car.

Of course, you can attribute those problems to the amount the car was driven. It commuted every day into NYC, was hit by a bus, and suffered the usual issues with Manhatten traffic. But, these issues started at around 50k, and have continued on. Same issues with her mom's ML320. However, my moms E320 wagon has about 25k on it, and hasn't had a single issue yet.

Is the car already out of factory warranty? Extended warranties increase in cost the later you add them.....I'd be expecting to pay in the neighborhood of $2K now to add a 7-yr/100K comprehensive policy.

They would know

Any possibility of purchasing an extended warranty FROM the manufacturer. I thought that for example, Honda would allow you to purchase an extended warranty from them for a vehicle before 3yr/36k miles. Maybe something similar with Benz, BMW, & Audi?
