BMW I would take: X5, M3, Z4, 7series.
Audi: R8, S5 (sportback and not), S4, Audi RS6 wagon, Q5, TTRS.

By the way, this was Audi's response. Weak. oh and it was Audi NA that called out BMW as a brand, and the lone Santa Monica dealership came up with that... gold.
Heres a good read about BMW vs Audi marketing. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=434559

Mix Audi's design with BMW's driving characteristics, and you'd have a damn near perfect car.

Each manufacturer has its strengths...

BMW could not touch Audi's exterior or interior design IMO. Exterior looks, Audi clinches it too.

For the most part, given how popular the 3-series is, I think it has alot to do with its past more than anything else. It is a terrific car, no doubt. But, does that make BMW > Audi?

Well, only if you think the X3 is better than the Q5; the 5-series is better than the A6; the 7-series is better than the A8...and that's tough.

And honestly, with the RS5, I would take that over an M3. Screw the price.

Crazy to hear. The dealership here is awesome. Whenever we bring the car in for scheduled maintenence or whatever, she always gets another Audi... and usually a new one. She's also been able to request service vehicles. Last time she dropped it off (2 weeks ago) she asked for a Q5 and got it. If she wants to try the A4 Avant, no problem. Happens all the time. No luck getting an A8, Q7, or R8 yet though ...

I wouldn't mind trying an Audi. I did the BMW already (535i)....it nickeled and dimed me to death. I like the exterior styling of Audi. Don't flame me for saying that the BMW's are all starting to look the same....

I dunno, have you seen the new 5series interior? I was blown away by it when i sat in it. Easily far better than the A6 interior. 5er exterior is kinda bland though.

I dont understand your other part. How can the current 3series be popular only becuase of its past. Current 3er has been out since 2005, thats a long time. Its the benchmark of the segment and always has.

Your 535 was from the 80s, rite?

The current A6 is five years old (or six, can't remember).

The A7 shows the new A6 interior and it looks fantastic.

That said, anything before about 2004 is definitely to BMW's advantage inside and out. Audi simply was not competitive before that IMO.

charliemike has said it for me. Give the A6 time to refresh...don't forget the current generation is out-dated.

Don't get me wrong, I think both manufacturers are leaders in their field in many ways. Without the 3-Series, there would not be others trying to make their product better (i.e. the A4, G-Series, C-Class)...That being said, I think the lead that BMW had when the first came out with the 3-Series has now reduced to the point where I think it's a toss-up.

But, again, that's just me.

True

A5/S5 > 3 Series coupe
M3 > A5/S5/RS5

Something about the M. Small changes compared to a 335 but it makes a significant difference IMO.

It's a tossup between the RS5 and M3...but, just to be different and because I'm not a /...I'd get an RS5.

I'm and I'd get both, but I would want the RS5 a little more than the M3.

What's with the hate?

Between the RS5 and the M3, I'll pick the M3 just because the RS5 doesn't come with a clutch pedal.

It cant be any worse than the manual in my dad's e39 M5 ^^,...annoys me quite a bit.

x3 on clutch pedal in the M3

On the topic of manuals,........I am worried when I go to get my next car I wont be able to find a manual I will like enough/would want to live with every day (or drive on a regular basis). That said, that thought of NOT having a manual is even worse. Hopefully things turn out well when that time comes. It's a shame Honda doenst make anything I would want to buy anymore, since they make great manuals (in my experiences anyway).

+1 After owning a S2000, anything else feels like rowing a boat. I don't know how people can say BMW manuals are good.

Coming from a person that owns a BMW; I still say Audi is pretty much ahead of BMW. Why?

Audi's A8 seems to be far more advance in tech than of BMW's 7 series. Audi's interior design is more creative, and better than BMW's. BMW's interior design is boring, and the infamous cup-holder designs are a joke. Audi is more reliable than BMW for a German car company.

However, there are going to be areas where BMW is better than Audi, of course. BMW does make excellent cars in terms of performance. Especially in the M line up. The BMW M3 totally dominates the S5 and RS5 in every way.

In terms of technology for both companies. Audi is ahead.

you must be joking or uneducated on the new 7 series if you think that. I haven't seen ANY other car in it's class as technologically advanced as the BMW 7 series. In that department it wins hands down IMHO. But there are other aspects that need to be considered. I also don't think the interior is boring, its a luxurious contemporary interior. I'd take a 7 over an A8 any day personally, although its a close comparison.

I wouldnt say far more advanced. But it does have stuff the 7 doesnt (wifi, handwriting recognition, google earth, aluminum space frame, better rear seats) in the US. It doesnt have turbos or active roll though.

Probably uneducated on the new 7 series. I don't really look at the 7s for the BMW line up. I'm only into the 1s, 3s, 5s, 6s, and Z4. Of course, all the M Line up too. Everything else is nothing to look at for me.

I saw a youtube video on the Audi A8, and it seems like it comes with better tech than the 7 Series. In the video, the A8 was said to come with a new Navi with google map interface. A touch tablet thing where you write with your finger to spell stuff? And something about internet. I'm not really sure if I remember correctly... I saw the video awhile back.
