Wheels: Plastidip + Bronze Duplicolor??

i am looking for this effect above ^^ (not my exact car, but the same setup)

has anyone tried this?

it would entail two coats of plastidip as primer + duplicolor + gloss...on stock 18" wheels.

ive been told repeatedly that the plastidip allows it to be 100% removable...which its a deal breaker for me, since the car is a lease.

anyone care to chime in??

agreed - i have experience with plastidip, but only by itself.

here's one source:

http://g35driver.com/forums/media-sh...lasti-dip.html

apparently, certain paints do not eat through the plastdip, such as duplicolor.

but any feedback here would be helpful!

Mention that the clear will act as a hardener and make it very hard to remove the paint.

My suggestion is to buy the products and find something made of metal of decent size and try it on it. I would be interested in seeing how well this works out.

What is the logic here? If you use plastidip you're going to be able to strip it off easily to get back to stock?

I still don't understand why you leased when every month you are talking about modding that car in some way.

haha. let's not go there.

the whole process costs $30 and its removable. plastidip peels off no differently than a cellophane wrapper.

heres duplicolor in bronze...not sure how it will look on my stockies tho, since the "lobster claw" design isnt symmetrical, like other racing wheels that would be bronze.

to be honest, i think it's gonna look tacky/cheap. yeah, it's cost effective but i think it would ruin the integrity of the car, it is such nice/clean car stock. not to mention that you'd have to do something with the chrome trim around your windows and any other chrome on the car. i could be a little too critical here, but its just my opinion.

good luck with your decision/method of action

yeah, im doing some research on bronze wheels, and i cannot find a single bronze wheel online that is asymmetric, such as my stocks...maybe its a sign...

Has the paint over plastic dip been done before or is this an idea you came up with on your own?

i like the idea too, but...

...in bronze...idk. gunmetal, maybe, but they are already liquid graphite - may not be worth the to-do.

^^ its been done before.
Plasti dip is really hard to remove if you spray paint over it.
If you are gonna do it i recommend doing thick coats of Plasti Dip before painting

yup, simply google: "plastidip primer" and quite a few things come up.

....

It's going to look like you plasti-dipped as primer and then spray painted it....in other words, awful...like the G.

It will come out looking nothing like the bronze on those 5Zigens.

What he said.

You can always sell the wheels/tires to someone else after the lease is up.

Honestly, don't paint them, it will look cheap. Plus, I agree on buying aftermarket wheels because no amount of paint is going to make those hideous wheels look any better.

Ok wow people are going crazy with plastic dip. Doing stripes on top of the paint. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-g...ne-wild-5.html

It peels off leaving no marks in the paint just like if it were vinyl.

I know people use it to shadowline the trim of older BMW's and it actually comes out pretty good. But, to use it on the paint like that .

If you're up for it, you can buy shark fin antennas off of ebay that are black and just relplace it. From the experiences that I've heard about in the past, it's a bitch to wrap the antenna with vinyl.

I took my antenna off when my roof was wrapped. I'm not sure how the interior of the IS differs from the TL but I removed the rear dome lights and the bolt for the antenna was an inch or two back from that area. I took a ratchet and took the nut of and pulled the antenna off.

yeah, im not wrapping the actual antenna. im leaving it white. im just trying to figure out how to wrap AROUND the antenna.

maybe i precut a hole in the material where the antenna would protrude, lay down the material, then work my way outwards with the antenna as a starting point.

you only get one shot, with a $100 piece of vinyl...

id have to remove my headliner - something i dont want to do.

i came across a video on youtube. the guys precut the hole for the antenna, laid down the material, and then taped across the midsection of the car. they peeled the backhalf first, and negotiated around the antenna. then removed the tape around the midsection, peeled the front half, and finished up. all while leaving the sunroof open.

^^ i suppose this technique allows the rear half of the material to stick down around the antenna, so your antenna hole doesnt shift when pulling out the material for the rest of the roof.

i guess ill try this technique. may be a bitch, since im doing this solo, as opposed to three professionals.

You're leaving the antenna white? Not a fan. It's going to look like a white pimple. A black antenna would let it flow better...

IIRC, I know with the 3G you can access the antenna through the rear dome light, which made it easy to remove, but I am not sure about the IS. Do you have to remove the whole headliner or can you just loosen the rear to access the antenna? The measuring technique seems to be a good way to do it, but removing the antenna, laying the down the vinyl and cutting accordingly seems like less of a headache.

Precut the hole.

Plasti-dip the antenna.

I chose vinyl over paint for the roof because it is 100% removable. It's pretty much just a huge sticker. Plus I'm keeping this car until it dies so why not?

I'll be sure to ask for your permission next time I do something to my car

Nope but then again I never really went out and searched for problems with it. I have 3M material that's meant for outdoor applications.
