What's the deal with low octane gas in Denver?

Okay so here in Denver gas comes in 85, 87, and 81 octane only. Plus at most gas stations it's 10% ethanol. It's my understanding that at high altitudes engines have lower compression. Is there a way to estimate how much compression drops at 5280 feet?
