goddamn right, change the speed limit laws, they are stupid shit. Just HOW you drive should matter, not how fast you drive.

I could care less about people driving the speed limit. It is set at a reasonable speed for safety and fuel economy. The truth is that most people shouldn't even have a damn license, let alone be allowed to drive faster than 65mph. The thing that should be written into law is driving slower than traffic around you while in the left-most lanes. If you're going to drive the speed limit then get to the right just like they do on European highways. I think I've read that you can get a ticket if you're driving slower than average on the Autobahn in Germany.

exactly how i feel. if you keep up with traffic going 75, you're ok. meanwhile, if you're going 85 casually passing someone up, you're fucked over with a +30.

i think 90% of a car forum addicted to discussing all things cars will agree that speed limits are too low. automotive technology has improved, the laws should reflect that

I think the speed limits are spot on.

I think the problem is assholes who drive 5 over in the fast lane. The left lane is for passing, not cruising.

Im usually the person chilling the right lane getting cut off and tailgated like crazy b/c people are trying to pass people going slow in the fast lane.

I usually do that when my wife complains that I'm going too fast.....and it's never long before she gives in on that one.

I generally agree with that. (Although the speed/safety aspect of speed limits on some major highways are anachronistic and serve moreso to provide a revenue stream for the municipalities served.)

Here in NJ, there is a 'Stay Right Except to Pass' rule posted on several major highways. However, that "rule" is NEVER enforced by the NJSP.......leaving left lane hogs (mostly from NYC) free reign to act as fast lane cholesterol.

Tell me about it, I must curse out atleast 5 a day on my daily commute especially the freakin livery cabs that do 50 in a 65 on Rt. 78. My philosphy is if you have a Kia stay to the right, if you are in cab stay to the right, trucks for christ sakes stay to the right, and if your car is 20 yrs old and 5 different colors stay off the highway..Ok rant over..And no I never drive the speed limit.

People need to worry less about the limit, and more about the flow.

Almost rear ended someone today on the highway, most of traffic was going 75-85 and this person just switched lanes with no blinker into the left lane. Brought myself down to ~55 and had to cruise behind him for a minute before I could get around him. Going 20-30 less than the flow is damn dangerous.

I'll tell you this:

If I drive the speed limit, I get 15-20% better gas mileage.

28 MPG vs 23 MPG and that's MIXED driving 50/50

I get 35 MPG all hwy doing 55-65.

70-75 drops it to 30.

Sure pisses people off when I drive the speed limit though.

So, to answer your question: If someone made me drive the limit, I would drive 10 under the limit, just to prove I didn't have to do what they said.

That video has made it's way around the web several time.

It's funny that they were trying to make a point, yet they were breaking the law themselves....

I usually do the "+5-7 mph" rule. so if I'm on Interstate I run 70-72. The state highway patrol in Ohio writes tickets left and right. They gave me my last one for 59 in a 45.

Only major one I disagree with is Semis running 55 mph. If semis are going to go around a slower car or other semi they have to swing out into the passing lane. so that slows down the flow and speed of the cars. which I don't mind slowing down. it just binds up traffic.

I actually dont follow the speed limit law, I always drive about 5-10 miles below the speed limit. In general I only got about 58mph on Michigan highway, mainly to save gas and driving a TL-p isn't the most exciting thing in the world. But you guys dont have to warn me about driving to slow, cus I only do that every weeknd at about 2 or 3am in the morning going home thats an hour aways, so there's rarely any traffic.
Today I also just found out my 4 cylinder rav4 gets worst mileage than my TL. =P

well your rav4 is also an suv which is already pretty damn heavy, and its being powered by an I-4. how hard to you have to push the i-4 to even get that car moving at highway speeds? how big is the 4 cylinder in the Rav anyways? i know that the CR-V's cant even get going for a really long time.

although im still wondering how awesome that 4 banger turbo in the RDX is gonna be like. its going to be pumping out almost as much power as the 3.5L V6 in the MDX...

Saw this a couple nights ago on the local news.

For those who have never driven in Atlanta, speed limits are 55-65 and you better get out of the way if your not doing at least 85-90.

While there may be a physical speed limit, for most people driving in the fast lane, there is no speed limit. So for peope that may think they are doing the right thing in the left lane should just get the hell out of the way for people who want to exceed the limit.

Judging from other people's driving, the speed limit should be reduced...

Until we have safer drivers:

A) reduce the speed limit

B) make driving tests much tougher and extensive

C) increase penalties

D) restrict people from driving vehicles exceeding 4000 pounds without a special license

And before anyone cries hypocrite, I drive at the speed limit and it is enforced here.

THIS is the problem...I can't tell you how many times on my 50 mile round trip to work that I end up behind some piehole who is doing ____ speed and not passing anybody but feels that they have the God-given right to occupy that lane. This is painting with a broad stroke but....big trucks/SUVs are the worst offenders. I also think that people in VA are much worse about this than in NJ/NY

Interestingly, there have been several letters written the editor of our newspaper asking for big trucks to only be able to drive btwn the hours of 6 PM and 6 AM. We have big traffic issues in Hampton Roads (lots of water + lots of bridges/tunnels = big traffic problems) and people are looking for solutions.

Not the HOV lane... the highspeed lane... You're one of those left lane bandits that drive 55 in the left lane in a 65mph zone, aren't you ??

Or maybe you've never been out of the city... Damn canadians

I am going to have to agree with B and D, as those seem to be the biggest problems imho.

I can kind of agree with increasing penalties, but people already get fucked as it is by insurance.

Decreasing the speed limit will just make more tickets, and piss people off.
