What Tools to Keep in the Trunk?

I was cleaning out my car the other day and realized that I don't have any kind of tools in my trunk. While I like the fact that nothing slides around back there, it's kind of scary to realize that my hands will be empty if something happens and I'm stuck on the side of the road.

So far I picked a beefy set of jumper cables, a gas can, and a can of fix-a-flat (which I know some people will give me shit for). I was also thinking about getting a small set of tools, a flashlight, and a sleeping bag just to be safe.

Am I dumb for wanting to keep this stuff back there? Also, how do I store it all back there? I was thinking about buying a cargo net made for our cars but I don't know how good they are.

I have a screwdriver with the different attachements and that's it....

I have an '05 six speed coupe and find the cargo net works quite well. Whatever tools and parts (I wouldn't have the gas can) you place in the trunk I would first place them in a Rubbermaid container for safety and convenience. Don't forget a good set of rubber gloves and first aid kit. I also purchased a bunch of those disposable coveralls and have a set in each car.

I have a first aid kit (which includes flashlight), a fleece travel blanket (rolled up), jumper cables, a reflective hazard triangle, and that's about it. In the winter, I keep a retractable shovel and windshield snow cover. I used to keep an empty gas can, but don't now...I've never come close to needing it --- all you have to do is pay attention to your gauge.

Some of it also depends on climate of your area (eg: some supplies for winter are worthless if you live in Florida).

As for tools -- I don't really keep any aside from the jack, etc that comes with the car. I figure the side of the road isn't the safest or most convenient place to want to fix anything anyway. If something truly needs repair, a tow truck is the better option anyway.

Also, I know the routes I take and how long and how far I travel. I'm never really out in "the middle of nowhere" where I couldn't absolutely get help asap if I needed it. Should I plan to travel outside of those areas, then I would plan accordingly and pack the car differently.

All of my stuff stores well in the cargo net (not even expanded) and in a few of the little side cubbies in the trunk. Basically, my trunk looks empty, leaves tons of space, and nothing slides around.

This is a funny thread, I have made preperations in my Z in the event I have a flat and/or need to get the car towed. Here is my emergency kit:

1. Jumper Cables
2. One Takata ramp (If I get a flat, my stock jack isn't able to clear my side skirts, so I need to get the car on a ramp first).
3. A small tool set with various sockets/etc. (If I have to get the car towed, I would have to remove the front bumper so it doesn't scrape getting on a flat bed).
4. Torque wrench for lugnuts


Overkill?

you sure you drive a Z? sounds more like a pinto haha. just messin with ya. seriously though, is hould keep some stuff in my trunk just in case.

in each of our semis and pickups we basically got a snap on truck it seems like in it.
each of our 3 semis and pickups have all this in our tool boxes:
I got a heavy duty portable air compresssor,3000 watt Honda Generator air wrenches, floor jack with detachable handle, wood blocks(in case we gotta really jack it up), air sockets, full sets of wrenches(both metric and american), full sets of sockets (deep sockets and regular) both metric and regular, screw drivers full sets both philips and flat head, amp checker(for if we're having electrical issues with the truck or tractors), extentions for sockets, drop cords(for the generator), electric battery packed drill with bits, saw-zall(PERFECT FOR CUTTING OFF "GATORS)(that's when tires on semis let loose and they hang up on the dual of the trailer. torque wrenches, breaker bars, sledge hammers, jumper box, tri-pod halogen flood light.

when you got 3 semis and 2 pickups outfitted like this now you know why Snap-On and S and K tool send us "perferred customer" crap.
and that doesn't even include the tools in the shop.

I usually keep a few screwdrivers,
and a small like 25 pc. ratchet set (metric only),

In california, I had one of those battery jump start things, which had lights, ac outlets, air compressor built in. Now w/ a new car, I don't feel like it is necessary.
