What should I wear

If I was going to go buy an Acura TL, should I wear ina suit or go in plain clothes. Will wearing a suit help in getting lower prices for the car?

Just dont look like a bum.

Confidence and knowing the EXACT numbers you want are your top two priorities.

I looked like shit when I went and test drove an M3.

Me and my friend didnt sleep much during finals, when all the test were done. Me and him went and test drove a Lambo Gallardo, and we didnt look all nice and stuff.

IMO, if the dealership wont do business with because of the way you dress, then its not worth your time to try to do business with them.

*referring to that Corleone mafia boss that got arrested after 43yrs...*

He looked like shit and lived in a place that looked like shit for 43yrs, I'm sure he's accomplished more with his brain than with his clothing wear

Then again, it all comes down to what's right and what's wrong, but back to the topic, I don't believe clothing has anything to do with it, be reasonnable, but have your mind focused on what you want, and make sure you leave with what you, initially, came for.

IMO, I think it is more time of month (as in end of the month) than clothing.

Wear whatever you want; just look clean and presentable.

I agree with others on being confident and knowing your numbers. If you know the game, then you're good to go. Otherwise, they will jerk you around all day whether you're wearing a suit or a monkey costume.

Just do your homework on the web at sites like Edmunds.com and wear whatever you feel comfortable in. Personally I refuse to dress up for a car salesman's benefit. But I have occasionally not been taken seriously when I showed up in flip flops and a cheap t shirt. I see it as the dealer's loss, not mine.

I agree ^^, and this goes for age as well. Nothing pisses me off more while in a dealership than not being treating with respect/being taken seriously, because I am in my early 20's. Their loss though, not mine.

haha that's why. you had connections, if some random dude walked into an exotic car dealership asking for a test drive, there'd be no way they'd let them test drive anything without i.d. they probably have scanners similar to those police use to find out your background info to see if you actually can afford one of their cars.

anyways you're a really lucky guy, i wish i could just stroll into a lambo dealership and test drive shit

to the o.p, i think if you dressed in a suit they would actually try to get more money out of you. they're probably thinking "wow, look at this guy all dressed up in a suit and all, he must have money." rather than just dressing casually like the rest of the car buyers.

good luck on your purchase whatever you decide to wear.

Just go for that miami vice look to the car dealer, especially with the shoes with no socks look.

One time my brother and I went to an Infiniti dealership to check out the G35 sedan. My brother was looking for a new car. We weren't dressed in suits, but we were dressed clean and presentable... jeans and a button-down shirt.

The guy actually said to us "Why don't you guys come back with your dad?"

Needless to say, we walked out. Later that day, he made a courtesy call to thank us for coming in and to see him again if we decided to buy. My brother said "No, we bought the TL." and hung up. What an idiot; his attitude cost him a sale. And we actually did buy the TL that day.

I love going car shopping my uncle. He makes a mid to high 6 figure salary, but we always arrive in his buddies beat up work truck and were wearing just basic clothes. He just likes to have a good time with it. Two years ago he was lookin for a new SUV and test drove the chevy tahoe denali, but the sales guy woudn't even talk numbers with him. He suggested he look into something less expensive

We ended up at a much better dealer

Clow suit

I always wear jeans and a white shirt, or something as plain as possible. I figure if they see you got $, it'll be a lot harder to bring the price down since they figure you got some $ to spend.

to most everything in this thread.

What you wear isn't important.....just know the specifics on the car you want and go in and deal. Clothes won't matter when they know you are serious about buying.

It's more important to drive to the dealership in the right car. Don't pull up in a RL, instead, use your rusty old Tercel.

Riiiiiight. Well, I test-drove an Enzo dressed as a robot.

As for the original post, wear normal clothes but as a rule, you don't want to look like a bum either. That being said, if you have money to burn, it really doesn't matter how you look...

Oh yeah I forgot in my first post.......

If you just want to test drive a car, roll up in the nicest car you can find. Normally they will let you let you go out alone

If you intend to buy a car drive up in something crappy but know your stuff as others have said
