What is the shelf life of motor oil?

I've spent my mornings the last month and a half cleaning out my grandpa's shop so I can paint my truck. I am nearing the end and getting to the point where I need to go to get rid of all the toxic substances in a responsible way.

Anywho I came across about 3 gallons of brand new oil in cans and another case and a half in 10 year old bottles. Most of it is Valvoline but I did have a couple of these in the bunch. One of the 76 cans fell apart when I picked it up.

If anything I will probably send it down to Mexico with my grandpa to be used on his sand rail. A little bad oil is the least that car has to worry about.

oh, and what about a half can of tang?

Heh heh, that's fun. Those old-school type cans. Anything with Montgomery Ward on it is certainly vintage.

Shelf life of dino type oil like that is about 3 years before it starts to break down.

After a while, motor oil will revert back to plant and animal matter.

Wow, those cans bring back old memories.

I'd offer you a nice opener/spout that would puncture the old metal can lids and allow you to pour oil but my Dad got rid of the one he had a couple years back.

another thing is that oil that old wasn't up to the same API standard that it is today (which is SM IIRC) and probably run like shit in your car and not offer near the required protection that new engines these days require.

I think you're better off rolling the dice with the Tang than you are with the oil

By good money you mean 10-15 bucks a can?
