What Online Sites to Sell a Used Car?
I haven't sold a used car in a while and it looks like the online marketplace for private sellers has changed .... AutoTrader is a $49 listing fee (which is OK, I guess), Cars.com doesn't seem to have a listing service for private sellers.
What are the popular options out there today? Where should I list a used car for sale?
(FWIW .... 2005 Mustang V6)

I have a firm offer that should close tomorrow. Lead via CarGurus.
Here are the group texts I sent to the scammers mentioned above. I'm pretty sure they've blocked me, but, you know .... just in case ....

You could try Carvana/Vroom/Carmax. It doesn't cost anything to fill out their forms on-line, and in this current market their offer might be satisfactory to you. Carvana and Vroom will come pick up your car too.

^ FWIW, last year I recommended Carvana for a neighbor and they gave him $700 for a 2004 Ody with 298k miles and a broken AT. I also sold a 1996 Honda Accord to Carvana in 2020 for $400.
I do find that Carvana do low-ball prices for more current models but for old cars (15+ years) they tend to give the best prices. Also easiest transaction I ever did was with Carvana.

I don't know what Carvana would do with the older vehicles, since they don't show anything for sale older than 2009.

I'm finding that AutoTrader, Cars.com and CarGurus have NO private sale listings for similar cars. They are all at private dealer lots.
It's not that private listings aren't allowed, but that the cars have all been bought up by dealer lots.

They gave me the best offer on my 2013 Lexus of all the others. It was actually more than I could find for sale in the area. They offered more than 50% of what I paid 8 years earlier.

As for Carvana pricing I only have one data point, a friend sold his GS350 to CarMax. In terms of prices CarMax > Honda dealer (he bought a Accord Touring and they offered a tradein) > Carvana.

For a car like that I'd do facebook marketplace or craigslist. Maybe try Carmax or Carvana/Vroom but the latter two don't really deal in older cars like that and may not give you a great price. You never know though. BaT and C&B probably won't take a nearly 20 year old Mustang that isn't somehow special.

I've always had a pretty good response using Craigslist--$5, pfft.
Sold my 08TL in 2 hours, but it was also parked near a busy street with a for sale sign and a detail sheet, so maybe that.
At least the people who stop to look are interested vs tire kickers and scammers.
I've also donated vehicles to charitable orgs, but you'll only get a $500 deduction unless the org resells it for more and tells you.
Some dealers are doing "We buy your cars for ca$h" thing, too.

I've had great luck with Craigslist the past couple of years. Having a very detailed ad will go a long way towards attracting good buyers. This being said, expect to get a lot of low ball offers. I simply ignore those people.
The car looks really clean from that picture. Is it manual?

Automatic. It's OK ... there's an modest area with clearcoat damage and some staining/wear on the interior.

you can try going through autotempest to list a car:
https://www.autotempest.com/sell
make sure you scroll down to the cars and autotrader link.
I've used facebook, craigslist and that with OK results. Best is to join groups for specific car on facebook.
Don't forget ebay too!

About 1/3rd of contacts so far (maybe half) are scammers or suspected scammers.
Got 2 or 3 running this scam:
https://www.abcactionnews.com/money/...their-vehicles
This site lists data providers approved by the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System: https://vehiclehistory.bja.ojp.gov/n...history#vppxb9
When you send this scammer-class a CarFax they get mad .... "I didn't ask for a CarFax!". When you tell them, "Well, then, buy your own report", they get really mad.
The other was a "Send me your info and I'll send you a check plus extra $$ for holding the car for me."
Uhmmm .... .... yeah, OK. Because that Nigerian Prince thing worked out so well, why not.

Ok ... here's the current plan.
All 3 of these vehicle history report scammers are using almost the same script and tactics. We're communicating via text.
I'm going to put all three on a group text and suggest they pool their resources to buy whatever vehicle history report they want, and that when we all meet at the BP at 5PM tomorrow they can bid against each other for the car.

I heard the three (3) scammers have some goats (free to a good home) available on Craigslist. You know, in case any of you are looking to inquire about free goats ...
https://nwga.craigslist.org/zip/d/ro...441689408.html
https://joplin.craigslist.org/zip/d/...441687828.html
https://gadsden.craigslist.org/zip/d...441684704.html
Oddly, they all signed up for texts, phone calls and "it's ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interests".
I wonder if they speak Spanish. Maybe I should try Russian instead?
