I thought it was supply chain issues preventing parts from being overnighted from Japan.

are there "jeep shops" that hold inventory? or has it moved towards the internet and custom ordering?

I know of one shop that holds inventory near me; Allout Offroad & performance...well, I havent visited in a long time...maybe they dont hold inventory any more, cuz there's nothing on their website that says they have in stock

There are some here and there that have stock but most people just buy online. Doing work on a Jeep is FAR easier than a car because the whole thing is designed to be fixed in the middle of nowhere with basic tools. The design can seem lazy but it is, in fact, pretty elegant at accomplishing that task. For example, you can swap all of the control arms with one socket and one wrench without jacking the Jeep up. You can change most suspension and driveline parts with basic tools without jacking the Jeep up.

^I watch/follow "Matts offroad recovery" in which they use a Jeep XJ to pull stuck vehicles out sand/mud/rocks.
they had a few field fixes, which was cool watching them stop in the middle of no where to fix said Jeep.

They recently built a wagon Corvair Jeep thing to help with recoveries and are currently rebuilding their XJ.

The XJ got a stroked 4.6 and they rebuilt the suspension and beefed up the frame, pretty cool.
