What engine/exhaust sound can you instantly identify?

For me it's the Porsche Boxter, 360 Modena and Subaru WRX engine, 350Z/G35 Coupe exhaust. They just have unique sounds that I know what kind of car it is before seeing it.

The Dino (V8) Ferrari's though I don't get to here them often enough to tell one from another, the 355 does have the best exhaust note and when they have Tubi and a test pipe they are glorious.

The E46 M3 has a very distinct note particularly in the mid-range, though some don't like the rasp.

Any of the pre-996 air cooled P-car flat 6s

The Fox body V8s, they also have a distinct note

The Viper, mainly because it has the exhaust note of a delivery truck, not at all what one would expect

The E60 M5 also is pretty unusual

Pretty much everyone mentioned the cars I would list that you can instantly identify by the exhaust note alone.

"BPU" 93-98 Supra TT (or single turbo), F355, F50, F360CS/F430 (they sound about the same) - F360 maybe... Gallardo/S8, S2000 w/ basic mods, some modded Mustangs, modded Viper GTS/RT10, modded WRX (non-STi) - sounds like ass. M3/M Coupe/M Roadster w/ S54 motor. E60 M5 maybe..

Ahhh yes forgot about those, you can hear one of those a block away and instantly know what it is, either a Beetle or the Microbus.

Unfortunately, the days of picking the make of an F1 car are gone. The last distint difference I could make out in person was the 03 Jordons, The Cossy had a much different tone due to their (poor?) traction control but you could only tell the difference when it ws into TC out of the turns, so it wasn't really the engine note. But even the V10s were distinct compared to any other series, then again 19K will do that! I remember the first time I ever sleeped in through a first practice, it was Indy 2002, it was the first time my wife came with me and we had partied really late and we woke up (about 2 miles away) and she ask me what the buzzing was and I told here the cars at practice, she didn't beleive me until we went outside the room and could hear them. Nothing more glorious! Forza Ferrari!

Same here. (I'd also include the Altima SE-R in that group)

Modular V8s from Ford Mustangs also make a distinct sound.

any Honda engine, varying by exhaust note (a Ridgeline vs. Accord, for example)

Any VQ application, varying by exhaust note (Altima vs. 350Z, for example)

M3, 360 Modena, any Porsche, WRX STi, turbo VWs, too many to name
