What do you think of the 2006 Lexus IS350?

I'm thinking about changing cars in 2006 and the Lexus IS350 looks pretty good to me. My question is do you think that my 2003 TL Type-S is worth keeping and become "somewhat" of a collector's car like the Acura Legend coupes? Or should I sell it and use the proceeds towards the downpayment on the Lexus? Thanks.

Get the Lexus. No chance of an 03 TL becoming a collector on any level.

I was just about to say this, because I would definitely consider getting rid of the TL-S in order to buy an IS350 AWD. Why do these car companies always take the smaller engine of the body and put AWD on it? Don't Lexus or BMW or any other company realize that a 545xi, IS350 AWD, M45 AWD, or any other car with high-performance capabilities and AWD would sell like hotcakes?

(That was purely a rhetorical rant. No need for responses.)

I doubt the The TL-S will EVER become a collector's car. Only thing people will be collecting are the trannys.

The legend was bulletproof and top of the line Acura, behind the NSX. They still make the TL and I doubt they'll change the name to something else anytime soon. Sell it before it depreciates more.

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the IS350 have an AWD option?

I don't like it. It has no manual transmission option! ARGH! Lexus! Get your heads out of your ass and offer your performance car with a manual!

That said, sell the TL-S. It will only depreciate more.

I second the request for a japanese AWD V8.

I'm not thrilled with the looks of the A6 4.2 (nor the reliability of German at the moment).

Infiniti sold WAY more FX45's than they thought (and are having a hard time moving FX35's).

Wake up Japan!!!!

Get the IS350. I just read it has 306 hp with 277 lb/ft and it does 0-60 in 5.6 secs. BTW, only the IS250 comes with a manual. The 3 series better watch out.

The 3-series should easily be able to withstand the new IS, as the Bimmer following is pretty solid (at least when it comes to the 3-series). But the G35S better watchout.

It doesn't make sense from a performance enthusiast viewpoint, but I'm sure they have their reasons. I'm sure they have a transmission that is stout enough to handle the power, so I'm not sure why they wouldn't introduce a manual tranny with the introducton of the redesigned IS Acura made the same mistake with not offering the 6spd on the CL in 2001...

If you want to play with the Big Boys (i.e. BMW) you gotta have a manual trans in a sports sedan/coupe...

That's M-B, and since it's an AMG car it has buttloads of power anyway. But there are a lot of reasons M-B doesn't offer a manual. One of those is look who the cars are marketed at. 99% of their buyers probably can't drive a manual. IMO BMW, Honda/Acura, and Nissan/Infiniti are the only 3 car companies actively 'promoting' manual transmissions by offering them in most of their vehicles. I'm still in shock that the Accord V6 sedan will be able to have a manual, according to credible rumours.

What Lexus is doing kinda reminds me of what Acura did in '96 (if they offered the first gen TL with a manual, which they didn't). But they have one engine option for the lower car, and one for the higher car. The higher car will undoubtedly get more features too. You know, I'd really really consider that IS250 if you could shut off their stupid vehicle stability/traction control system, which you cannot, and if it was optioned up to the 350 levels. Of course I'd LOVE the 350 with a manual, but that isn't happening. Maybe I'll consider Lexus again when they decide to make more manual transmissions.

On a side note, has anyone here driven the new IS250/350? I'd like to know if it's afflicted with the typical Lexus numb steering.

That does suck, probably not enough interest in it for them to justify offering it.

As for that 99% of MB drivers who "cant drive a manual" (unsubstantiated conclusion), I wonder how many of those Bennys share the garage with MT Boxsters and 911s.

Devil's advocate:
While Infiniti offers the G35S/C with 6MT, those are only two variants of one model where the vast majority sold are 5AT. Beyond the G35, no other Infiniti offers an MT. As far the Nissan brand probably only the Z and Sentra sell MT models at a rate that makesup a noteable percentage of total sales; I have my doubts about the Sentra MT and the Z is a specialty car (read: not volume) While Maximas and Altimas have an available MT, the vast majority of those on dealer lots at any given time are 5AT.

But BMW models do seem to be partial to MTs.

I didn't mean it like that. I just mean that all I see are rich moms driving them really slow.

I see that with Lexus here too. If Lexus wants to change their image about being too soft, they should offer more manuals.

Give the New IS350 a year for Lexus to work out the 1st year kinks. Then jump into one.

I'm sure there will be a manual for the IS350 eventually. Didn't the G35s start life as an auto only? What about the IS300? I think these companies release the auto at first then wait until the initial excitment dies down a little before invigorating it with stuff like manny trannies.
